Hulababy - ELC Parachute - what material?

Thread title says it all - I have a wonderful proper music parachute - but it's only 2.4m. Sometimes I need a bigger one and was considering this.

But what's it made from?

Anyone else who has one - please let me know.

Are you selling the old one......I might be interested in buying it?

WigWamBam · 30/04/2006 09:49

I have one sitting in front of me here ... it says on the box that it's nylon.

threebob · 30/04/2006 10:01

WWB - thanks for that. If I can be cheeky does it billow nicely and does it get really creased?

Katymac - I'm keeping the old one (actually it's only 2 months old). It was handmade by a lovely lady here in Christchurch NZ and was pretty expensive, it's mostly just the right size - but not always.

It's nice actually, billows well and doesn't crease too badly - it looks creased when it comes out of the box but the creases fall out pretty easily. You need quite a few children/people holding it for it to be really effective, at least five or six I'd say, and smaller children need adults to get it going well, but when we've had lots of children round it's been a big hit.

The kids each hold a handle, they can go round in circles with it, they can billow it up and run underneath it (or sit underneath it, that seems popular!), or the parents can billow it up and the kids run from one side to the other, you can put inflated balloons or balls on top and see how long they can keep them up in the air for, you can play games ... the children hold the parachute high in the air, then someone shouts someone else's name, the kids let the chute go and the person has to run (or hop, or skip or whatever) from one side to the other before it lands on them. Or you can have it on the floor with the children's feet underneath it, one is the "shark" and goes into the middle of the parachute, the children make the parachute make waves and the shark goes off to hunt for it's prey - it grabs someone else's feet, and they're the shark.

Honestly, it's great fun. We haven't used it often because you need several children but it's always gone down well when we have.

FrannyandZooey · 30/04/2006 10:24

Carl, with younger children you just sit round and waft it, or stand up and let the children run underneath it. You can sing a song with up and down actions, ie Grand Old Duke. You can sit inside it with the parachute over your heads and under your bums, to make a 'tent' for story time or singing. With older ones you can play more complicated games such as "everyone wearing something red run under the parachute NOW", tag games, etc. You get the idea. It's a great prop for movement and music games of all kinds, and the children love it.

It's way the most popular part of my activity groups - especially for the babies. There are ways you can introduce it gradually so that they are not too scared (agree there is usually one child terrified though :))

Buy "dancing with a circle" by Julie Wylie on CD and follow the instructions.

I know millions of parachute songs - but they don't come across well over the internet - and I'm scared of breaking someones copyright.

Sounds like fun, I might have to give it a try.
I might let the kids play too
