A quick cloth nappy query
kiwicath · 18/01/2004 10:37
Hi all. Was adamant I wanted to use cloth nappies with my first baby born 3.5 weeks ago and so pleased I ignored all the negatives from other mums where I live. Bought loads of motherease one size (liked the fact they were a onesize and not so bulky) and only a few Totsbots size 2 (very cute but thought they would be too bulky). I have now fallen in love with the Totsbots and pleasantly surprised to find they are not bulky on and fit much better between the legs than the motherease. Here's my question. At 3.5 weeks the totsbots size 2 fit my wee man perfectly (9 pounds). Want to get more but worried they will not fit him all the way to potty. How old were yours when they grew out of them??
Another quick one - alot of the anti cloth nappy mums are telling me that he will have trouble when it comes to walking and that the cloth nappies will effect his hip placement. I know (or hope) that's b**locks but please reasure.

Affect his hips?? Eh? Does that mean that all of us pre-disposable babies have hip problems? I think not!
(and I'm a die hard disposable mum )

Not only is it bo**ocks, Kiwicath, it works the other way 'round. Putting a baby in cloth is believed to help the baby's hips. I can't remember the details off hand, but it seems that keeping the legs a bit wide prevents later hip problems, and sometimes putting babies into cloth is even prescribed by specialists for 'clicky hips'. Also provides extra padding for when they wobble and fall down hard on tender bottoms!
Oh... and let's see, I walked at 9 months, DS walked at 9 months, DD at 10 months, my stepsister walked at 10 months... we were all in cloth nappies. Are your friends seriously suggesting we should have been up and about earlier?
Totsbot: DD is 27 months & the Size 2 TotsBot also still fits her. She's short, but hips about the same as the average 27 month old (tummy probably bigger, mind....); I would expec the Size 2 to make it to 3yo or so on her.

ok, my dd2 is in tots bots size 3 and has been since 10months. BUT she is a very large girl (last weight was around 33lb). i did use them for a while on my elder daughter at night as wasnt quite dry then, she was 3.5yrs old and they fitted her easily. i do find that i have to use nappy nippas with them tho as the velcro isnt all that goood.
i was worried she would outgrow the size 3's and then i'd be stuck (disposibles are pretty awful on her as they dont fit round the waist properly) but there is plenty of growing space left in them.

Bollocks to the hip problem!
My dd is 2 and in Tots size 2. The tabs can still meet in the middle, so i'm expecting them to last her till potty training. She is quite skinny though. Babies tend to go through a phase just before they start to walk where they get fatter around the tummy, then thin down again when they take off, so don't worry if your ds seems to grow out of them!

Ds2 is 15 months and has bags of room in his Tots Bots size 2s. Ds1 is 3.3 and still wears a size 2 at night. He's quite slim, but the tabs still reach the velcro without a squeeze.
And the hips thing is utter rubbish so don't worry about it.

The treatment for mild hip problems is still to wear cloth nappies! DD was breech and I had to take her for a scan to check her hips had developed ok; they asked me to bring her back again for another check later. I asked what the treatment would be if she did have a problem; they said "oh you'll just have to put her in cloth nappies for a while... oh she is wearing cloth isn't she ... oh well nothing then!". Although if there is a major prob they wear those brace thingies. DD turned out to be ok anyway.
Although she does tend to walk as though she's just got off a horse...

Agree about the hip thing being a load of rubbish. My DS2 is 19 months and is still comfortably fitting Tots Bots size 2, I am hoping that they do him to potty training.
LOL about the walking as if they've just got off a horse!

I was also told by the consultant that, if dd's clicky hip needed treatment, it would be to put her in cloth nappies ("the bulky sort" in his words).
