Advice on renovating a VERY small bathroom please

We want to remove the tasteful turquoise suite and replace with a white one with shower over the bath. No room for shower cubicle. Fittings need to stay in the same place. Room is dark as light to window is blocked by neighbour’s extension.

So, some specific questions:

Are compact bathroom fittings worth the extra money? They seem to be about double the cost!!!

Does anyone have a short 1500mm bath and if so, does it feel tiny? The bathroom would mostly be used by our children. We have a standard 1700mm bath now and your kneees hit the corner of it when you sit on the loo!!!!

Tiles - Should we tile all the walls or just the ones we need to, above the bath? It wouldn’t cost a lot more to do all four walls, as room is so small. Would it make the room feel too cold? If not, do we just put up plasterboard and paint them with bathroom/kitchen emulsion?

Some friends say use all white tiles, as they will make room look larger. Others say it will look too cold and clinical! If we don’t use white tiles, how else can we keep the cost down?

Any alternatives to horrid white plastic bath panels?

Are acrylic baths ok or should we fork out for the more expensive ones?

Mirrors – all the magazines say to use lots to make the room look bigger. Do we get these fitted to the walls and the tile around them (cheaper) or get tiles done then hang mirrors?

Storage – I have looked at bathroom cabinet and am Shock by the cost!!! Any suggestions?

Glad to hear that getting glazier to stick sheets of mirror on walls looks ok. All that mirrored storage looks lovely and is useful but is too much £££££ for me.

Large pale marble / stone effect tiles sound lovely - just need to find these within the budget

i think I am looking for expensive hotel luxury look bathroom rather than cool and funky. all on a B&Q / ikea budget of course

And of course has to be totally practical for 3 young children

We have a back to wall loo. Its great - much cleaner look. We have hidden in a ready made cabinet that matches the other cabinets we have installed. Its easy enough to service if you have an access hatch installed. Has a smaller flush - so water saving too.

KristinaM · 27/04/2006 20:46

VVV - does that mean that your loo and basin and besie each other, linked by a cabinet thingy? I have seen that in a magazine and it looked really lovely.

I cant have that as my loo and basin are directly opposite each other and the bath is right next to basin. Thats why DH hits his knees off the corner of the bath when he sits on the loo ( TMI I know!!!)

They are now. We moved the sink to another wall, and the toilet we turned around 90 degrees (it was in the corner of the room, so not a big deal with the soil pipe.

i found \link{http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/nav.jsp?fh_location=//catalog01/en_GB/categories

KristinaM · 28/04/2006 09:58

thnaks VVV. That exact one wont do as the loo and basin have to do on straight walls not corners. But the Barcelona petite suite is a possibility as has the 1500 bath I need. And is only £300 in sale.

re decoration, the consensus here seems to be that large scale white tiles are the way to go. I think I will look for an inexpensive border tile and put large mirror above sink. Which is beside bath so that whole wall will be tiled anyway coz of shower above bath.

On opposite wall I will tile half way up and then put large mirror. I reckon if I just paint wall it will get scruffy as the room is so small you brush against it as you come in and it will get splashed by kids in bath. Its only about 2.5 m square anyway so shouldnt cost a lot

I'll go to B&Q thsi weeked to look at suite and look for wooden or MDF bath panels to paint ( thanks to those who suggested this). Will also chekc out cheap but nice vinyl floor tiles as lots of you recommended.

Lots of the budget is eaten up already by the joinery work not plumbing. the walls were originally tongue and groove but the last owners tiled over this. The old ( lovely turquoise) tiles are breaking off, we stripped them but the wood underneath is damaged beyoind repair so we need to get it ripped off and the walls plated. All the woodwork around window also needs replaced ( and painted of course). And ceiling also needs plated to hide repulsive artex. Sigh

Given that we already need a joiner I will ask him to quote for building some storage ( as suggested by countess)

We also have a small bathroom (and it is odd-shaped). We got our new suite from MFI - the Salween range (don't know if they still do it) is compact but a lot cheaper than Ideal Standard. Don't get MFI to fit though - very expensive. It is worth getting the fitter to come around before you order - we thought we would have to have a short bath but he was able to re-jig things to have a full length. Shower over with concertina folding shower screen. Got one of their built-in cupboards with a semi-recessed basin so it all looks quite neat and streamlined. We got some nice white tiles from there -matt so they don't show water marks easily and painted the rest of the walls white. Have bright towels and with all the bath toys it doesn't look too clinical.

KristinaM · 28/04/2006 11:07

thnaks KTP - have been on MFI website and they have salween stuff on sale.

Ok, at the risk of, well, anything.....we originally ordered our bathroom from MFI. It was more expensive than the suite we have now. We had to wait several weeks for a delivery date. They didnt turn up. This happened 3 times. In the end we cancelled and we got a refund.

As i understand it, it is alledged by Watchdog and some other people i know that this is quite common for MFI and their customer service, IME is abysmal.

B&Q was where we got ours from. We got large white tiles (approx 25 x 15cms) the blue mosaic border. THe white bathroom suite - plain but robust, mixer taps D shape shower curtain rail (corner bath) and the built in bathroom units (2 tall cabinets, sink unit and back to wall toilet unit. It all came to about £900. (The units were about half of that cost). We got the vinyl floor from a carpet shop (although B & Q now do a similar style - we got blue mosaic to match the tile border).

HTH.

OK. Haven't read all the other posts so apologies for any repetition here.

1500mm bath - yes we have one. We find it genuinely comfortable (I can lie flat & sink into the water with my feet up by the taps - surprisingly comfy) but then I'm 5'4" & DP only a couple of inches taller.

Tiles - we have white dimpled tiles (with 2 rows of small dimpled coloured tiles) on the 2 walls around the bath. The dimpled tiles reflect the light and seem to make it look more interesting & brighter. The other 2 walls are flat plaster -painted.

Acrylic bath - ours does fine. No alternative to fairly horrid plastic panel though.

Mirrors - we have a mirrored cabinet - that's it. Have you got any options on lighting to make it seem bigger/brighter?

Storage - we have one cabinet above the loo, one above the baisin and a 3rd high up by shower fitting that no-one really notices. Think they were from Ikea. I know not everyone's taste but we found them more reasonable than most.

Finally - worth paying for a decent flooring. Something that ties in with the rest & is a clean, simple design.

Hope this helps,
good luck

Haven't read all of the post, KristinaM not sure on your budget but we have a tiny bathroom and went for glass splashbacks for our shower over bath unit instead of tiles, the back of it is painted so it seems sort of reflecty plain colour (you choose the colour) and is soooo easy to clean compared to grout etc. Has definately made our bathroom seem more spacious.

KristinaM · 30/04/2006 22:20

wichy - thnaks for info about the 1500 bath - good to know they are ok. The bath with only be used by the kids so I think the 1500 will be fine

Chuffed - good to hear from you! How are you and your lo? I thought I'd heard you were moving back to NZ? Yes woudl be interested in more info about the glass splashback please
