Best white paint?
Ange8 · 16/01/2004 11:56
I want to paint a couple of rooms before putting our house on the market in Spring, and would like to paint them white - but not "pure brilliant white" as both rooms are north-facing and I think it would like too cold. I know Fired Earth and Farrow and Ball do off-white paints, but they all look so dark on the colour cards that I can't imagine that they will look white on the walls. Does anyone have tips on good, non-garish, slightly warm white paints that I could try?
popsycal · 16/01/2004 11:59

crown (or it may be dulux) do a range of paint qwhich i cant find but will keep looking for you
Hulababy · 16/01/2004 12:14
We have vinyl matt emulsion white on all of our walls here, and eggshell on the woodwork. Not sure which manufacturer. It isn't cold at all, espeically with just 2 or 3 picturs to give some colour.

Thank you popsycal, mothernature and hulababy. Extra special thanks to posycal for going to so much trouble to post that link - those paints look great - I'll be off to B&Q tomorrow to get testers of 'Providence' and 'Independence'(the off-whites) and 'Driftwood' and 'Prom' (pinks). One of the rooms to be decorated is the main bedroom, and I'm wondering whether a very pale pink might look good in there (just need to be careful about scaring away buyers with that kind of colour!) with a satin throw, maybe, in amethyst or silver for the bed (as seen in Next etc).
I need a property stager!

Oh, and of course thanks JanH for that suggestion . My Dad told me that my carefully chosen cream paint in the dining room looked lovely - 'I've always liked magnolia' - he said. Grrr! Come to think of it, I'm not at all sure I can tell the difference either...
aloha · 16/01/2004 16:20
Camellia is a nicer standard off white than Magnolia I think - less beige/pink.
Laura Ashley's Country White is a lovely pale stone/cream that's not at all pink or yellow. I have it on my walls and it's very warm but neutral iyswim.
popsycal · 16/01/2004 19:08
oooh glad you liked them!!
let me know what you think...perhaps get a cuple of testers first!!
we need to redecorate afew rooms and will be going for those paints again
hoxtonchick · 16/01/2004 19:33
we've got independence from the b&q new england range on our living room walls - it's lovely. in fact, friends liked it so much they have it now too.
Enid · 16/01/2004 19:47
Lime White - Farrow and Ball.
Dh says I would paint him Lime White if I could
Ange8 · 17/01/2004 12:03
Got my tester pots and decided to go with 'Independence' - thanks everyone (and I'm really encouraged by your comments hoxtonchick). Enid and Aloha - Thanks for your recommendations - they are going on my 'must get testers' list for paints for the new house - yes, I certainly do like white!
I knew the stylish Mumsnet bunch would come up trumps on this one
CountessDracula · 17/01/2004 13:16
Warning - Farrow and Ball wall paints seem to mark much more easily than for eg Dulux. Though their colours are lovely I wouldn't go for them again on walls.
