We are getting a Broadband connection in our area soon. Can anyone tell me whether there are big differences in the monthly charges offered by different providers?

Oldiemum - I think most hover around the £30 per month mark. Although I think AOL might be offering £28.

lydialemon · 15/01/2004 15:20

I'll have to check with DH, but I think you have to be carefulwith the really cheap deals as they have a slower connection speed. We are with freeserve - £27.99 all in and speed is 576 kbps which I think is all really average. We did get the first month free and even I could set it up!

saintshar · 15/01/2004 15:31

I have been looking into this for my Dad who has just got a computer. M2T is right, most are between £28 and £30 per month. A few are doing slower versions of broadband, like Tiscali. They do one that is 3 times faster than normal dial-up connections, and it is £17.99 p.m. Another is 5 times faster, for £25 i think. It depends on what you want to use the internet for really.

JanH · 15/01/2004 15:48

AOL is £27.99 and all the hardware and the BT upgrade were free when we signed up.

JanH · 15/01/2004 15:52

See if this helps at all?

miranda2 · 15/01/2004 15:56

We use Pipex which is great, and about £24 a month. (If you decide to use them tell me and use my name, then I get a month free!!!)

We are with Tiscali We use the half speed (256 kbps), which is fine for us - seems loads faster than non-broadband; and we always get on very quickly, first time. But for us the main advantage with broadband is just to have the phone accessible at the same time.

clairabelle · 15/01/2004 16:58

we're with NTL and it's 17.99 p/m

Festivefly · 15/01/2004 17:10

NTL: £40 per month, i get a basic tv package, sky1, itv2, bbc3 etc. All phone calls to land lines. Non stop internet.

pie · 15/01/2004 17:12

I can't recommend Zen enough, currently £23.99 a month, down ONCE in 2 years, brilliant tech support.

pie · 15/01/2004 17:15

Ah but they're not known as NTHell for nothing. Just from personally experience I found NTL really bad, has anyone here had trouble with them?

Festivefly · 15/01/2004 17:17

Yes i have loads, but its just the cheapest way

zebra · 15/01/2004 17:33

WE have NTL, they have been ok. Do go down about ... once/3-4 months, but we haven't tried anybody else so I can't compare.
Mind you, when we started we were on NTL dial-up, and it was (MUCH) faster than the connex from work (a big university), so I thought NTL was brill!!

zebra · 15/01/2004 17:47

ps: DH reminds me that we have a 600kb/sec cable modem for £25/month (just modem, no telly), whereas the cable modem for £18/month with NTL is probably a 150 kb/sec? DH also think some of the services other people are mentioning may actually be ADSL -- more like a fast phone line (perhaps 512 kb/sec) than a cable modem. DH says we personally are better off with the cable modem because we are paying phone to NTL anyway (something to do with the package deal), and when we first were looking he reckons BT were too much.

fairydust · 15/01/2004 17:51

we've just got bt broadband 2-day for £27.00a month with free modem and connection

codswallop · 15/01/2004 17:54

we have ntl

no complaints

fairydust · 15/01/2004 20:20

just to let u know NTL isn't available in all areas - we can't have

pupuce · 15/01/2004 20:51

I am VERY pleased with Vispa. When everyone else told us (including BT with who we spent an entire afternoon on the phone with!) we could not get Broadband.... Vispa rang us 30 mins later and said it was sorted and would be with us in 3 days! It has never been down with us.

fairydust · 15/01/2004 20:59

It often depends on what's availble in the area

SofiaAmes · 16/01/2004 00:28

I have ZEN too and we have them at work and my boss and his parents have them at home and we all LOVE them. I had a problem right in the very beginning which turned out to be my router not them, but they were really nice and helpful and have this great recording while you are on hold that tells you what position you are in the queue.
Don't use BT or NTL!!!!! I had dial up with NTL over two years ago and am STILL getting bills every month for £1 for not having direct debit (never mind that I don't have anything to direct debit since I haven't had an NTL line since august).
This website is great for impartial dsl info

CountessDracula · 16/01/2004 00:31

I have bt adsl but business one, it is fine only 1 breakdown in a year and that turned out to be a billing problem

udar · 16/01/2004 10:20

We went with Bulldog. We got a special deal which has a 2MB connection speed which is about 4x faster than the 500kbps that most offer for £30. They still have the special going as I can't do links www.bulldogdsl.com/special_offers.asp.
