Glider chairs

butwhatdoiknow · 15/01/2004 14:53

I am very tempted by one of these. Although the style is not my taste they seem comfortable in shops.

Does anyone have one and if so what brand?

Can't work out if it is worth investing in Dutailier for 500quid or going for a Hauck at 200quid. Or a g*d knows what make off ebaby for 130 quid???

Any help would be great. Am willing to shell out 500 quid if it is really worthwhile but obviously would prefer 200.

A good feeding chair is a rally worth spendidng some money on, but you don't need to go to the top of the range. I got mine 2 years ago- a brand new Dutailier 'Sandy' from \linkwww.kiddicare.com/{} for £200. Just had a look now and it's now £250. It's worth shopping around. I love mine. I got the footstool as well, which is nice, but I don't think is quite so necessary and then it starts taking up a lot of space.

popstar · 15/01/2004 15:10

Sorry, link didn't work! It's kiddicare.com if you didn't guess.

jmg · 15/01/2004 15:15

i have a Dutalier - which was £500 ish from john lewis. I have it for nearly 6 years and have bought a new set of cushions in that time for it. It still looks great and is as comfortable as ever, even though I don't have babies anymore .

The children love to sit on it while we are reading together etc.

I'm fairly sure that the cheaper version would do though!!

jmg · 15/01/2004 15:17

Oops forgot to say - make sure the one you buy has padded arms - some of the cheaper ones don't and as you spend a lot of time with your arm out supporting the baby's head I would think you need the cushion on the arms.

popstar · 15/01/2004 15:55

Agree with jmg- also good reading chair. Mine has padded arms.

150percent · 15/01/2004 20:44

Can't remember the make but wasn't at the £500 end of things - defintely persuaded me to b/feed for longer and is still in daily use. Boistrous toddlers need to be aware that it isn't the safest of chairs on which to climb etc, but defitnely worth the money.

ginnie · 15/01/2004 21:11

if you do decide to buy one, go through \linkeasychair.co.uk{} as they seem to be cheaper than John Lewis and offer a really comprehensive range

glider chairs are wonderful - so comfortable, and I think you particularly appreciate them at night

donnie · 15/01/2004 21:47

we shelled out for the John Lewis one with padded arms and , although expensive, I think it was a ecxellent investment. I bf'd my dd morning, noon and night in it up until she was weaned. We read her her bedtime story in it, read during the day, she has her bottle milk sitting in it....we use it all the time! when she is old enough it will serve as a nice easy chair for her bedroom. It is also very comfortable and I've fallen asleepin it quite a few times !

butwhatdoiknow · 16/01/2004 00:05

So those that have a non-Dutailier one have found the gliding mechanism fine then?

My blokey seems to think I'll be popping out bubba's for the next few years so it may get good use!!

Thanks for advice.

Anymore - please continue to add - not gonna order one for a while.

I have one of the early Dutailier chairs and love, love, love it. And imo, the footstool is essential, it's glorious to rock back and forth with your feet up. We all fight over it, it's so popular in our house. If I was buying now, I would get one with the padded arms. They weren't available when we bought and the wooden ones can get uncomfy if you're holding a heavy, sleeping babe in your arms.

ginnie · 18/01/2004 20:38

butwhatdoiknow

don't leave it too long before you order as they take quite a few weeks to deliver - Dutailier come from Canada I think

prettycandles · 19/01/2004 15:01

I found the glider chairs marvellous during pregnancy, and got a Dutailier from JL (£300? I think the covers you choose affect the price). But it was never comfortable to feed in: not enough lower back support (I had to add a thin cushion), no neck support (I had to add another cushion, dumbell-shaped) and the arms were too low to give me any support while holding a baby, especially in the feeding position (so I had to add 2 more cushions!). I used it every night until ds slept through, but never used it for dd. It has been marvellous for reading together! I'm 5'8, so perhaps the chairs are made for shorter people.

butwhatdoiknow · 21/01/2004 20:30

Thanks all for your help. Poor befuddled mind still can't decide. Anymore for anymore??????

Hi there
wonderful investment! I am besotted with mine. Didn't want to/couldn't fork out £500 or even £300 so got one from a company called Cheeky Brats (on the internet - google search for glider chairs popped them up) and they delivered a lovely spanky new chair (some limited assembly needed but it wasn't a prob) for £139 inlcuding the stool (which is definitely worth having). There seem to be three makes that dominate the market - the deluxe aforementioned Dutalier, a company called Hauck and the one I got which is made by Tutti Bambini. Having sat in almost every glider rocker in the south east's shopping establishments (I was a LONG two weeks overdue!) I can tell you that the Dutaliers are the height of gorgeousness - mainly because of the lovely cushions and variety of styles (the Tutti Bambini ones are a bit polyestery and the wood slightly orangey) BUT I couldn't tell the difference when it came to the rocking mechanisms and mine is great as well as being great value. It also has pockets in both (padded) sleeve covers (great for muzzies, books, mags, lipsalve etc). I think delivery was free too and it came in about a fortnight. I wouldn't be without it now, and wouldn't bother trading up to a dutalier for the extra money. It makes feeding/soothing/hanging out in the nursery even more of a pleasure and I'd say it was one of my best baby buys.
Oh PS, the Dutalier top of the range jobbie has a brake on it that means you can 'lock' it in several positions- I think it's the only one that does that. I agonised about whether I'd regret not having it but can't say it's really even crossed my mind since (until now) and I can't see it's a massive advantage...hope you enjoy yours if you get one

butwhatdoiknow · 21/01/2004 21:40

Ahh thanks squirmy. I feel less alone now. Glad am not the only one who agonises over such - @minor@ decisions.

Its always the case that once you go for something you forget about the alternatives.

It happened to me with the pram/buggy too. I must have done about 40 hours internet research and 10 hours in shops !!

butwhatdoiknow · 21/01/2004 21:45

aHH COOL just looked at the cheeky brats website.

Is your tutti bambini chair white or blue? What is the upholstery?

Because some sell on ebay this chair, i think and the cream is 'leatherette'

OP posts:
jmg · 21/01/2004 21:56

Leatherette may not be a bad idea though. As I said earlier on this thread I have had to replace my cushions as they had gotten very mucky (after 5 years though). A leatherette one would be wipe clean. Although it might be a little bit hot and clamy come to think of it...

I too would have agonised over this one, however my DH bought it for me as a suprise... it was waiting for me when I came out of hospital with my DD - maybe thats why I have such an attachment to it!

Do you think I could start my own strawberry thread in 30 years time. I lost my glider chair... I loved it soooooo much and I have wept every day since they took it to the rubbish tip.....

squirmyworm · 21/01/2004 22:06

Hi there - mine has dark blue cushions - JMG is right - they can get a bit messy - ds has already decorated them a few times but they sponge clean quite nicely so far...btw they don't fit quite as neatly as the dutalier ones - mine has an irritating tendency to pop up slightly from the seat on one side but hey ho, but ever expanding rear should sort that out soon!

Yes, research for this kind of thing tends to temporarily take over your life doesn't it! I'm onto to bottle warmers now - any advice, send it this way!

butwhatdoiknow · 21/01/2004 22:11

ahh bottle warmers - get your own thread love!!

Only joking. My mum says - never warm a bottle and they never miss it. She breast fed us for a bit then gave us bottles of cold formula. She said she always felt very smug when she saw other mums faffing about warming up bottles.

squirmyworm · 21/01/2004 22:13

done! awaiting pearls of wisdom on neighbouring thread.

nice idea about trying bottles "au naturel". will have a go when ds less grumpy (first jabs today - not happy) thanx for the tip

butwhatdoiknow · 21/01/2004 22:18

mind you she is quite lazy my mum.... ha ha. In a nice way. She is into low maintenance parenting. Quite funny sometimes. Her solution to preventing allergies she said " when you bring the baby home let it have a good wriggle around on the floor in the dust, make sure it gets used to it or you will spend your life cleaning....."

I dunno how much truth there is in it as her advice is 30 yrs out of date. She also used to have a ciggy when she breast fed us as she said it relaxed her and helped the milk let down. My dad said the nursery was always a smoky haze. Ha ha - they'd put you in the clink for that these days. I did have a very happy child hood though - and no allergies or asthma and never get colds so.......

BACK ONTO THE CHAIRS - do we feel the reclining feature would be a benefit??

Yeah I dunno how I'm going to fill my life up when I finally order this chair.

Joshjunior · 21/01/2004 22:32

I'm awaiting the arrival of my Dutailier having tried one in the feeding room of my local Daisy and Tom store. If their idea was to get you to order one I'm afraid it's worked on me. It was so comfortable dh got rather worried as I had been in the feeding room a rather long time!

madgirl · 22/01/2004 08:34

butwhatdoiknow, are you another mumsnetter pretending to be someone else?

butwhatdoiknow · 22/01/2004 23:41

mad girl ?!! Intrigued, I am. Who do you think I may be?

butwhatdoiknow · 31/01/2004 20:30
