Where to get juice without additives?

I am trying to cut down on certain E's in ds's diet. Luckily, we eat pretty healthily so the only real problems so far have been the colours in jelly and finding some squash like Robinsons that doesn't have sweeteners or forbidden Es in. Does anyone know where I could get some? I have found one concentrate from Schloer at our supermarket which is ONLY four times as expensive as the normal stuff but there's nothing in the organic section (I go to Safeway which I don't think is great but could easily to any one of a number of others in the area). I checked the Boots baby juices and was horrified to find that they had huge amounts of sugar and only 10% juice! Any ideas welcome.

a big beaker of water with a splash of pure fruit juice in?
Beware - it makes ds's nappies explosive!
How old is your ds?

The "Hi-Juice" squashes are 50% juice and no artificial sweeteners - Tesco, Sainsburys, Robinsons. They do have some preservatives, not sure if they are forbidden? Lots of flavours.

I know there are some organic squashes, our Sainsbos used to have them, but can't remember the name.

Or you could just dilute real juice - doesn't taste the same though! (Or be a really cruel mother and make him drink water )

Look for "cordials" (like squash, but simpler, not artifical ingredients). They do need to be kept refridgerated after opening, though. Rock Organics, is the one Sainsbury's sell. The lemon & black currant flavours are very nice.

We've got some Rocks Organic which has no E's and ne preservatives...but my kids won't drink it. Some of the more expensive 'cordial' types of things are ok too. There is 'Roo juice' which is a winnie the pooh juice drink which is ok, and some of the'juice drinks' cartons in the juice section are ok. It's a case of lots of label reading.

I tried lots of things and we now have pure fruit juice, diluted 50-50.

Roo Juice, which unfortunately only comes in ready made "one drink" cartons, is only fruit juice, water and "natural flavourings".

DSs (5 & 3) have pure fruit smoothies now and used to have diluted apple juice.

Crossed with stupid girl Roo Juice has no added sugar which is what I like about it.

Soupdragon, you can get big ready to drink cartons of Roo Juice.

Dd generally gets pure orange diluted with water 50/50 but occasionally I do buy Roo Juice.

I will also allow Capri Sun (not too foten though as it is one of the 10% juice lots of sugar ones but I prefer sugar to artificial sweetener (gives me any my mother stomach cramps so goodness knows what it would do to dd).

I bought the Rock organics concentrate once and it tasted foul. If you really really search Robinsons do an organic squash (quite a bit of sugar again but no sweeteners or e numbers and it tastes nice. I got it from Asda.

There are organic squashes in Sainsbury's as JanH says. Something Rock. But why not just give ordinary pure fruit juice heavily diluted in water or plain water.

Can i ask what is wrong with just water?
My kids only have juice (the organic cordial mentioned below) when we have guests.... they don't complain and drink loads of water.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will try the Rock Organics from Sainsburys. Of course there's nothing wrong with plain water which both boys do drink and they also like milk. However, particularly in summer, I find it difficult to get them to drink emough water so it's a case of dehydrated children or letting them have squash, I have to say they have it so weak it's almost as if the squash bottle was just waved over the cup! We do use the Roo cartons when we're out but they are not cheap, are they! And they have pure fruit juice for breakfast which I understood I also should not be giving them too much of, so thought once a day was enough? Isn't parenting complicated?! At least we don't have the explosive nappies to worry about though as ds's are 2 and 5.

I have found the best and the cheapest!!! Go to your local corner store (preferably an asian one) and get DIME brand fruit juices. They are from someplace foreign (I can't remember where) and they are pure juice without any additives and they are super super cheap (some stores sell them for 50p a carton). And they are delicious. Having said all of that, I only give my kids juice on special occasions or to cure constipation. Otherwise it's water or milk.

The Rock cordials, especially the blackcurrant, will really come into their own when your children start school and find out that every other kid has Ribena on tap at home and in their lunchboxes. It's helpful to have something comparatively healthy to offer little playmates who apparently "don't drink" water...

Having had to start to inspect everything for enumbers for DS you have to be very very careful even about 'natural' colours as some of them do actually appear on the list that the Hyperactive childrens Society recommend should be avoided - things like cochineal and caramel for exapmple. Also the other thing about squashes is the preservatives they use - mainly E210 Benzoic Acid and E211 Sodium Benzoate. You need to look out for the words as well as the numbers as lots of manufacturers hide the enumbers by putting the names. I have found that Ribena Toothkind seems to be ok (the preservatives and colours are not on the 'forbidden' list) from the point of enumbers, but most other squashes aren't.

I do have a list of enumbers that the hyperactive childrens society redommend removing from childrens diets if you are interested. Please email me via Mumsnet.

Oh and as for the jelly if you have a Coop store nearby their own brand jellies are better than most, and I can recommend the green one as being without evil taint!

We do the dilute fruit juice thing - 1 part juice 2 parts water. Normally apple juice.

Marina IME it starts before school. DS's 3 yo friend drinks ribena from a bottle.

Rocks juices are lovely (ds wont go near them but I love then). Ds really likes Copella apple juice diluted with water. It is very pure and tastes just like apples. It's a bit more expensive than some juice but it can be well diluted and still keep its taste.

DS drinks either water or 1/3 pure apple juice and 2/3 water ... he has never had a problem with explosive nappies ...
I have never given him squash or fizzy drinks and now at the age of 4 if he is offered them at people's houses he declines as he doesn't like them ...
He also tells people very loudly that Ribena makes your teeth fall out ... ooops! But then you can't buy Ribena Toothkind in NZ ... all drinks like squash are loaded with sugar ...

Wedgiesmum, thanks for the offer of the list of "forbidden" colours and preservatives. I do already have a list, in fact I took several lists and compared them so I think we are pretty well covered. I agree about the misleading labelling, several manufacturers seem to have stopped using the E numbers and are calling the additive by its name instead - sneaky. Having only started seriously trying to cut out these Es I have to say the supermarket shop is definitely taking a lot longer while I check everything!
