Where can I buy nursery paint?

Because our B+Q dont stock it anymore. And, do I actually need it for repainting a cot, or would just normal paint do? I assume there's less nasties in nursery paint, or is it just a gimmick to make you spend money?

Answers

What can I paint my baby's cot and toys with?

Because young children are likely to suck and chew their toys/cots, toy and cot manufacturers are required to use paints whose composition complies with the European Toy Standard EN71, Part III 1988 or BS5665 Part III 1989 which is the British Standard set for toys safety. A requirement of both these Standards is for paint manufacturers to test every batch to ensure that they are free from or do not contain more than specified levels of certain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. Test certificates must be made available on request detailing the analytical results.

Although our paints are formulated specifically for painting building surfaces, none of the materials quoted in the Standards are added to our formulations. However, analytical tests to determine their presence are not undertaken on each batch. The possibility of adventitious contamination from raw material sources or from after storage in cans cannot be ruled out therefore.

so i would guess that to be 100% safe you should use a product which says it is safe for baby's furniture..possibly an eco/organic paint?

A friend has given me an old cot, but it could do with sanding down and repainting. Can you suggest a non-toxic paint that would be safe to use? Ann Warriner, by e-mail

You have to be careful when repainting children’s furniture, as some old paints contain nasties such as lead, which can be harmful to a baby. If it’s a really old cot (pre-1980), I wouldn’t recommend stripping it as the paint may release lead into the atmosphere and might not comply with safety standards. However, if it’s a relatively new cot, you should be able to update it quite easily. Start by sanding down the existing paintwork with a fine-grade sandpaper, and wipe away all traces of dust with a lint-free cloth. Choose a paint such as proAqua Satin Varnish from EarthBorn, which doesn’t contain any oils or acrylics harmful to healthy or the environment. The varnish doesn’t give off toxic gases during application or drying, and comes in four colours, including white. It costs £19.20 for 750ml. Call 01928 734171 or visit www.earthbornpaints.co.uk for more details.

Also try a search on 'green paint' and see what comes up...

You can buy Crayola paint from Focus stores that is child friendly which is designed for painting childrens furniture. I painted DS2s cot with it, he's gnawed on it a bit and survived Smile

I think the "International" range pf paits might do a toy paint. I'm sure I've seen it under "speciality paints" in B&Q. With all the things like tile paint ans spray cans.
