Bath toys - keeping them clean

Some of ours seem to go black and mildewed pretty quickly. Is there a better way to keep them clean? I bleach them every so often, but to little effect.

Do you mean inside droile? I have given up on rubber ducks etc with holes in them as their innards just go black!

You could try putting them in the dishwasher on a low heat (but try one first or may dissolve!)_

I drain mine everytime. Then every week when i clean the bathroom i leave them in a full bath of disenfectant. What kind of bath toys are they. I'm wondering why ours haven't gone black

fairydust · 13/01/2004 23:11

have never experienced this with dd's toys - we just take them out the bath and put them into a big bowl

misdee · 13/01/2004 23:12

mever had that problem. tho we have to 'deoil' the kids toys here after swimming in an oilatum bath. mmmmmmm greasey

Clarinet60 · 13/01/2004 23:22

They don't all go black, just some of them.
I'm not expressing myself properly, I know....
perhaps it's the rubbery ones that go the worst?

I head that the black stuff inside bath toys can harbour MRSA -- a virulent, deadly hospital bug. We threw out a rubber duck on this basis only a few weeks ago, but I can't find any info to confirm it, now. This \link

zebra · 14/01/2004 02:44

Oooh.. getting cocky when I don't preview links, aren't I? Let's try again .

codswallop · 14/01/2004 08:14

I bin them sporadically

can i recommend mothercares set of small buckets wiht holes etc

ALl mine love them

Bozza · 14/01/2004 09:09

Rubber ones go black inside and then have to be thrown away. Others (eg ELC frog/turtle/fish and Mothercare windup croc/turtle/lobster and one of those things you stick on the side and pour water in) get black in the ridges. These are plastic so I dishwash them and then clean the black out with a toothbrush, very infrequently because very tedious. I'm planning on cleaning them up and putting them away until new baby arrives because DS is now into bath letters and animal stickers he got for Christmas.

Might buck my ideas up now though given Zebra's info.

Our rubber ones go black inside too so I just bin them every so often and replace them. The rest we put in a little tub that hooks onto the side of the bath with holes in so they drain.

Do have problems with the suction toys that fit in the side of the bath though. The suckers go black and then stop working. Does anyone know where I can buy replacement suckers?

Zebra

Now you've scared me. Our bath toys go balck really quickly because we use Balneum Hermal bath for the kids' eczema and it si really greasy. Will try the dishwasher.

Bozza · 14/01/2004 11:42

We store ours in one of those net bags and they still go black in the joints etc. Dishwasher does not clean them fully either.

bundle · 14/01/2004 11:46

zebra, I think the MRSA was only on the toys because they were in a hospital environment, where the bug spreads easily. toys in people's homes would be unlikely to have it on them, but I'm sure all manner of other creatures live there! yuk!

Clarinet60 · 14/01/2004 12:51

Thanks folks, glad I'm not the only one. I bin them too, then feel guilty 'cos they are mostly presents from relatives. The dishwasher doesn't eradicate it for me either. Oh well, I'll just keep binning!

Hulababy, I know ASDA has those suction/suckers but I don't know if that is the kind you want.

prettycandles · 14/01/2004 15:23

Milton's and water, 1:1 in a bucket, drop toys in and squeeze out air so that they fill with the solution, leave until mildew bleaches, about 24h -or longer for convenience - then rinse very well inside and out. I do it 3-4 times a year. It's only the ones that don't drain well that need it. Neither child has caught MRSA yet.

Hulababy · 14/01/2004 15:24

I will have a look GenT. We have a huge ASDA Walmart superstore here with 2 floors - that must have some. They are type that fit onto the back of the bigger bath toys.

Furball · 14/01/2004 22:18

I put mine in the washing machine along with the bath mat and give them a wash that way, every so often bit noisy mind.

Furball · 14/01/2004 22:19

sorry about the cr@p punctuation.
