Electric epilators - any suggestions

hello all,
now that the sun is on the way :) am having to consider giving my legs an MOT and decide on maintenance!! but with two babies under 18 months the luxury of shaving everytime i shower is probably unlikely to happen!!!
Anyone have any thoughts on electric epilators? Have decided that if i can do child birth and section then i can probably cope with epilator pain Wink
Would really appreciate your thoughts.

have heard good things about the Phillips satinelle ones that massage as they pluck (eek!) but don't use one myself

boozefree · 20/04/2006 13:40

Had four kids, two natural tow CS. Don't do it, hurts like F..k!Grin (IMHO)

Cappucino · 20/04/2006 14:13

tend to drink wine first Grin

it does hurt but you don't have to do it that often

I have a braun epilator - I have been using it (or variations of) since I was 17, which is more than half of my life now.

It stops hurting the more you use it. It hurts like hell the first time you do. Alway make sure you do small areas at a time, and pull the skin taught with your left hand - it hurts much less this way. It does take a while to do, but obviously lasts much longer than shaving. Oh, and make sure you exfoliate your legs when you take a shower - it avoids ingrowing hair problems. And never do it just before you are going out - particularly at the start as your legs will look like someone has been beating at them with nettles. On the other hand, this looks much better than a 5 o'clock leg shadow Grin

My daughter swears that the Starter Head on her Phillips model never hurt at all :)

I have a old model, that did hurt first time but not at all now. If I ever treat myself to a wax you don't feel it as your hairs get weakened.

roosmum · 20/04/2006 21:33

squarer, do you do the whole leg??

i also have a braun (i think!), but usu. get fed up with it by about knee point Grin do underarms tho, so that makes me hard, right?!

welshmummy, i'd say go for it, but warning - it DOES sting!! stuffing a towel in mouth has been known to help...

beetlejuice73 · 20/04/2006 21:38

I have the Braun, which is OK. Been using them for years, and it's really not painful - even underarms. Used to have a rechargeable one, which was better than this Braun one, because you didn't have to be tied to the wall, and didn't have to travel with a big heavy plug. I definitely think these gadgets are the way forward.

Squarer · 20/04/2006 21:45

I do do the whole leg Roosmum, yes.
The top half always hurts more, but there's far less hair so it's a trade off Smile

Squarer · 20/04/2006 21:47

Oh jesus christ mary mother of god, just registered that you do your under arms with it. Not only does that make you well 'ard, but it scares me, which is generally difficult to do Shock Grin

yoyo · 20/04/2006 22:05

Got one and it is great. Either I have a high pain threshold or you lot are soft!! Can do bikini line without a grimace (unlike with waxing). It does take a bit of time but is cheap, no parking and you can do it when you want to.

Squarer · 20/04/2006 22:23

pmsl laughing at the "no parking" bit Grin

welshmummy · 22/04/2006 14:29

Braun or phillips then?
Should i get sucked in to the ice/massage extras that they also advertise?
Had my bikini line waxed as well as legs once and it wasnt as bad as i thought was going to be, but thought of inflicting own bikini line/arm pit pain is little bit too much at the mo Shock.
Squarer - how long should you do legs before fake tan? treating self to spray st tropez befor a wedding - wedding on sat, fake tan on thur eve so can leave it on thur eve and into fri before showering it off-will have to lie low as will look like had an accident with exploding bottle gravy browningGrin - you can bet that one of my little ones will need trip to GP or something similarly unplanned fri morning Blush.

I use the phillips. I wouldn't be without it now and the pain is something I got used to. When first used I had to make sure that it was indeed plucking the hair rather than giving me electric shocks as it was v painful.

Squarer · 22/04/2006 16:35

I'd do your legs AT THE VERY LATEST Wednesday evening. Before if at all possible! (Braun, all the way!)
Smile

yoyo · 22/04/2006 18:40

Braun here too. I'd do them early in the week too especially for the first time. I don't bother with the ice thing or the "sensitive" head. I want them out as quickly as possible!
