How much did your patio or decking cost?

About to get some quotes to have something done outside. Fancy decking (personal choice is only reason for this), but may go for a patio (especially if going to be cheaper).

We can't do it ourself (believe me!!!) so need to payout for someone to do it for us.

We are wanting something very simple about 16 feet by 8 feet.

If decking they'll be no steps or riailing bits, and it doesn't need any building up or anything.

If patio, I want nice looking slabs rather than just plain grey slabs or anything.

I know this various loads, but very curious as to how much roughly we may be looking at - ready for when the quotes come in.

octagonal patio and path around house was around £2000ShockNice honey coloured stones.

desperatehousewife · 10/04/2006 17:52

think decking has to be raised up...

brimfull · 10/04/2006 17:53

octagonal bit is around 9ft x 9ft so not very big

For decking we have been told we obviosuly need a slight frame, but our space between ground and door is slightly lower than standard wood frame size, so needs to be cut down a little.

ggirl, that seems very costly!

Last year were had a 25ft by 14ft deck laid by a local decking firm IIRC it cost £2,200. It had to be built on a frame and they built a step and balustrading (sp?).

hulababy · 10/04/2006 19:25

The one quote we have had so far was £1300, so maybe a reasonable one. still need to get some more done.

We got a local carpenter. He did a plain deck 12x7 with a pregola over(very plain)no fancy bits and he charged 400 pounds and loads of teaWe had had other quotes for about a thousand and he was the last who came round It was a bargain and still looks great!

BingoStingo · 10/04/2006 19:50

BingoStingo · 10/04/2006 19:51

cant your dh do it?
mine layed one once and he isnt so super doopa diy ish

leggymamba · 10/04/2006 19:57

We're having the same here - also dh with no skills (or time). I was considering that concrete that has a pattern printed into it as thought it would be cheaper and not need weeding. Don't know any one that has had it done though.

We inherited a teak one which is only 2 yrs old but has risen in peaks here & there. It looks like it was screwed together but have no idea how to get it to lie flat again. I think the cold winter has caused it to do this or maybe all the rain. Does anyone know how to fix this? Do we wait until it stops raining (ha!)?

AllieBongo · 10/04/2006 20:05

had 25sq m of patio done, with gorgeous natural sand stone, massive slabs in brown and cream. Took a week to do and was £1750.. my friend Mel did it. She's fab, and reliable if you're in the London area, and uses her feminine charms to get cheap materials!

MrsSpoon · 10/04/2006 20:08

Hula, you do have to watch the quality of the decking, ask to see the materials they are using. The firm we used had really good quality thick boards and as we are (hopefully) staying in this house for the longterm this was important to us.

hulababy · 10/04/2006 20:12

South west I think (or is it east?) Get sun in morning and then again late afternoon/evening. Blocked during day by house behnind.

Dh can't do it. We are not DIY types at all!

noddy - that sound fab! I think we may need to go down that route, rather than a speciailst decking company.
