Bunk Bed - too "risky" for 2 year old?

DS will be 2 next week and dd is now 3 months. DS needs a new bed and we were thinking about buying a starter or junior bed. But as they will both share a fairly small bedroom soon we thought about buying a bunk bed with removable ladder, so that he can sleep in the lower bed for a couple of years. Would be grateful for any comments......Many thanks

for my dd3 a bunkbed would be out of the question! - she's 2. With my dd2 who's now 5 it would be ok.

My DS has a bunk bed with a sofa on the bottom in his room and even thogh he has a single bed he sleeps on the bottom.

colditz · 09/04/2006 22:36

ahhhh

look in Argos, they have a pine bunk bed that splits into 2 single beds. You can put on bed in the room, leave the other flat packed, and when you need it you can put the top on.

This is exactly what we have just done!

Problem could be that even if your ds understands he mustnt try to climb up to top, visiting kids might not. Dd and ds shared a room with dd in loft bed, when ds was 4 or 5 we had a few scary moments with friends trying to get up there even though ds himself undretsood the rule.
ie it might take a bit of policing

DS moved in one aged 5. IMO 2 is too soon.

Forgot to say

It's £160, you get 2 single beds, 2 mattresses, and they fit together to make a bunk bed.

i was thinking about bunk beds for my two of 6 and 3 but no way do i trust my daredevil 3 year old dd not to try hurling herself off the top bunk!

Ds1 and ds2 were in bunk beds from when ds2 was much younger than 2. I think he was about 18 months. He wasn't allowed to climb up the ladder and, miraculously, didn't. So I would say it would be fine.

DS2 was in the bottom bunk at 18mths - we've only got a two bedroom place, and couldn't fit 2 beds or a bed and a cot in their room. We used a bed guard and had no problems at all.

DS1 (4) and DS2 (2) share a room - DS1 has a midi bed with a slide and DS2 standard bed. DS2 does climb up on to DS1 bed with no problems but doesn't climb down (which is more difficult) as he comes down the slide. Never had any problems.

Was just going to post suggesting what Colditz has done. Sounds like the best solution. Although my friend has had her 4 yo and 2 yo in bunks since before Christmas (ie when lo was only 1). And she does climb up to the top bed sometimes.

Similar answer to Colditz, my friend got bunk beds from Ikea. She only used one at first as a normal single bed, and it already had a built in rail so very unlikely for a child to fall out. This may be a good option for you.

Argos also do some low height bunk beds, suitable from 3 upwards

Try \link{http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15567&catalogId=10103&storeId=7&productId=16268&langId=-20&parentCats=155671611316261*15623\this} you can use it as bunk beds by adding another bed pack.

Okay, start my explanation again. The pic shows the bed at the middle setting. But there is actually three settings for this bed. The bottom, middle and top. You can have it as bunk beds by having bottom and top but don't need to build the top until babs is ready for sleeping in a bed in twelve months or so.

My DS went straight from cot into a cabin bed at age 2 (said from age 6 on instructions). It has a rail all around apart from ladder entrance, so we put his pillow at other end.

We then found, when older, that he would fall out of normal beds as he was so used to being able to roll all over his bed & be held in by railings!

Should be OK at 2 in the lower bunk. Our kids did it at this age on holiday.
