Roof bars

So we're thinking about getting roof bars and a roof box for weekends visiting family etc. (rather than buying a bigger car) - but I haven't a clue how they work and can't seem to find much information. Can anyone who has them tell me if you can take the bars off easily when not needed (for sake of fuel consumption, wind noise etc.), and how much of a faff this is? And are roof boxes safe, like for driving on a motorway when it's windy...? Thanks!

They are very easy to use, and not very much effort to get on and off.
You can feel the wind catching them occasionally, but only if its very windy and you are going very fast.
In short, they are a great way to create more space in the car.
We gave a Thule, and would recommend it.
Main problem is storage when box not in use.

Easy to take on and off once you have assembled them the first time. I have Halfords ones so perhaps they are more of a fuss. You can get loads in a roof box. The bars make driving a bit more noisy if you don't remove them.
