Grobags - advice please!!

I have heard many glowing reposrts about grobags, and just need some advice please.
How many do you need at a time? Is one OK, or do you need to wash them often and need 2? Also can newborns use them? My baby is due in Summer (July) so I assume a 1 tog is OK for then, and introduce a 2,5 tog when it gets colder? Any advice greatly appreciated! thanks

The tog you use depends on the warmth of the summer and your house. We found a 1 tog plenty warm enough for DD, and never used a 2.5 tog one until it got cooler.

We had 2 on the go - one on and one in the wash, but we wash very regularly. I guess 3 (one on, one in wash, one clean) would be ideal but I don't think it is necessary.

we just have one - if you wash it in the morning it's dry by the evening (2.5tog).

The grobag website explains in detail what tog rating to use with which temperature, and also what clothes to wear with it. Will post a link in a mo.

I have 3 and use them all the time now ds is 7 weeks old but I found that they were a bit too cumbersome for him as a newborn. Also, for the first week or two we swaddled him in a blanket as he felt more secure this way and settled better. I think they are fantastic for him now though as he sleeps with arms flung out and kicks about - he always used to end up out of his blanket by the middle of the night. I think 2 should be enough but you might find them a little big for the first few weeks.

thank you for all that advice... will check out the website now.

DS slept partially swaddled in his moses basket for the first three months and I put him in a grobag after that - he is an active sleeper so it was perfect - I wash mine once a week so only have two which are rotated - and always bought the lightest weight as our house is quite warm -

eidsvold · 04/04/2006 00:23

i had two - one in the wash and one on - found they dried pretty quickly - especially during the summer if they posseted on them.

handlemecarefully · 04/04/2006 00:31

Best to get 2 - to cover those diarhhoea (sp?) and vomiting bugs...

MumtoBen · 04/04/2006 20:36

I have used them since DS was 6 months old (now 14 months). Would say you need 2. DS had has 6 V&D bugs this winter and we have managed with just 2. They are quite expensive compared to blankets. I have a blanket as well, just in case. I use 2.5 tog in the winter, 1 in the summer and nothing when it is hot.

jmum6 · 04/04/2006 20:43

We use 2, one on and one in the wash. We waited until ds weighed 10lb before using them as he was so small, and he was a summer baby so it didn't matter too much if he kicked the blankets off.

Nonyummymummy · 04/04/2006 21:20

Hi Nixnoo

You probably won't need them at the beginning with a July baby as it will be so warm. DD (18m) was born late September and kicked her blankets down and stuck her feet on top from when she was born! She was 9 4, I waited until she was 4 weeks old. I think they say they should be 10lbs before you use them as that means that they shoudln't slid down through the head opening. They are fantastic especially for night feeds etc as baby doesn't get cold and as they get older they cannot climb out of the cot easily with them! I bought the early ones in Mothercare as they had nice soft cotton ones, I always had 2 as babes will constantly throw up in the early months. I didn't wash every day though! Now DD is older I have 2.5, 1 and 0.5 for the warm weather. I have 2 of the 2.5 and one each of the others as they can be substituted for each other.
Best of luck btw

where is the best place to get a grobag - we have the stripey travel version in 1.0 tog but want to get another one for when this one is in the wash.

Are the side opening ones worth getting?

Ledodgy · 08/04/2006 00:27

They sell 2.5 tog ones in matalan for £8 I assume when the weather warms up they'll start selling 1 tog ones too.

Chandra · 08/04/2006 00:53

You can get a 0.5 summer Grobag (We had one for the holidays and worked well for naps but for night time, we used the 1.0 all year round (My house is always at the same temp so no need to change)

peaches27 · 16/04/2006 22:17

I have been given a lovely genuine Grobag which is 100% cotton, with white towelling front, yellow piping and duck motif, but I have no idea how many tog it is. I think its great and 4 month old does well in it, and I would like another like it, but the Grobag site doesnt have one like it. I presume its an old range. Any ideas on how to find what tog it is (not on label).

peaches27 · 17/04/2006 16:47

Ahh just found out its an organic grobag and its 1 tog. If you can get one like this its really nice because its all cotton and lovely, soft and fluffy, washes really well.

Rumplebums · 17/04/2006 19:37

We have used sleeping bags for both my daughters - my first started in one from around 4 months as she liked to be swaddled until then, and my second has been in one from around 6 weeks old. We found having two was easiest - although they do wash and dry quickly, it means they're not available for naptime if you do it during the day.

Also, Grobag is not the only make of sleeping bag - try Grembo, for example, which are lovely organic ones.

As I have posted on another thread, there are some reduced at TK Maxx, various brands, Zorbit, snugglesac, Grobag,Mammas and Pappas etc. The Zorbit ones I got were £7! They are 2.5 tog and cotton.

peaches27 · 22/04/2006 18:55

After being given one, and buying two I am finding 3 is good if we are a bit sicky and dribbly! Two would do though. We only started using them at 4 months and wished we had started a bit earlier. We started with them when she went into the big cot. Prior to that she was swaddled in a soft cotton blanket, but had started to move about the cot and roll over...
