Anyone got a Leapster handheld game thing? Any good?

We are travelling to the south of france with 3 kids. The nine and seven year olds have nintendo Ds's, so they will be fine. Our dd turns four just before we go and I was wondering about the leapster handheld that looks like a chunky gba. She loves Dora which is one of the games for it. Anyone got one, and is it worth it?
Thanks.

Yes my dd has got one and they are very good she thought she'd got a gba like her db's.

My little girl is 6 and loves hers, mind you I got it half-price from Tescos. My 4yo likes playing with it too, when he gets a look-in!
Not very good visibility in bright sunlight though

Thanks.:) DH has pointed out that ds can pass on his gba when he gets his nintendo ds for his birthday, so maybe we'll look for a game for her to go on there.

the l-max is the one that can be either hand held or connect to telly

good review at www.edutainingkids.com

DD got her's 2 weeks before she turned 4 and loves it (particularly Dora and Bob the builder). Second the sunlight problem, but it proved invaluable on a 2 week trip and 2 eleven hour flights.

Just curious - roughly how much do they cost?

Highly recommend it. The Dora game is also very good. Keeps my dd entertained for long journeys in the car or the plane and even in resturants

Also recommend getting rechargable batteries too.

Amazon have got the Leapster for £36 and the L-max for £60. I paid £35 in Tesco for the L-Max, but I've not seen them since.
ToysRUs and Woolworths are a fair bit more....

The reviews I've read about this (on Amazon) are by parents who rate the game, but there seem to be problems with it breaking/malfunctioning. I'd consider one for dd if I thought it would be somewhat durable. Anyone here have any direct experience?

My son got his about 18 months ago (might even be 2 years). We've never had any problems with it. He loves it and is still challenged by it. Just make sure you get games aimed at their level. My DS is 6 and is loving the Incredibles game although some parts are still too difficult . I would say this has been our best buy toy wise.

Do you use it as mainly a portable device, or hook it up to the telly? Portable is the angle that appeals most to me so she can use it on long airplane journeys. Am I right that it comes with headphones? Did you get the battery recharger?

MaryBS · 04/04/2006 18:45

At the moment its still fairly new, so she uses it both ways. No it doesn't come with headphones and no it doesn't come with a battery charger. I bought one for her digital camera though, and am using duracell batteries at the moment, until I buy some more rechargeable batteries. They're selling power leads for it on Ebay at the moment, because it doesn't come with a power lead either!

DD1 has a leapster and has had it for roughly 2 years now and loves it. She has spent the last hour on it then got into bed with her nintendo sp advance.

Orinoco · 04/04/2006 20:42

Yes, brilliant, my dd1 loves it.

The lmax (which is a handheld but can also be used with the tv) was £35 in Tesco a few weeks ago.....

MaryBS · 05/04/2006 17:06

I didn't realise Tesco still had the offer on, they sold out at my one months ago. Worth a look though. They were also selling the Spiderman and the Madagascar game for it for £6. Dora was still £24

Earlybird · 06/04/2006 13:00

Anyone have any knowledge of how the Leapster handheld (LMax) compares to the Fisher Price Pixter? They look to be the same sort of product, but wonder if one is better than the other....
