Should curtains be double the width of a window ?

If curtains are on a track (rather than the tab or eyelet ones) how wide should they be in comparison to the width of the window?

1 and a half I think. Depends on how full you want them.

red37 · 02/04/2006 10:14

It depends on how much gather you want. 1 and half I'd say.

SoupDragon · 02/04/2006 10:16

I thought double was the standard recommendation.

red37 · 02/04/2006 10:16

Sorry delgirl, did'nt read your post.

JoolsToo · 02/04/2006 10:17

1½ is the receommendation double look much better (especially when shut!)

schnapps · 02/04/2006 10:17

Thanks for the replies Smile

Soupdragon, It's double for net curtains, so maybe less for normal curtains?

I think it is for nets [bleurgh] but not curtains. If you've got thick material you may not be able to pull them back enough if it's double.

Double is the standard recommendation for normal curtains and net curtains.

schnapps · 02/04/2006 10:19

Missed your post, JoolsToo. Think I'll look at getting 1 and a half the width, and compare to the price of getting double the width, see how much differnce in price there is.

Thanks again all Grin

No - I used to have a "how to calculate your curtain fabric" and it was double on that. I've certainly made them with less though - they're fine but don't look as "sumptuous" :)

heavenis · 02/04/2006 10:20

Curtains are usually made with enough material to have a nice gather. Double is for net curtains which gives a better look.

SoupDragon · 02/04/2006 10:21

(that's not meant to sound bossy or know-it all BTW:o I've even made them at less than 1.5 times when that was all the fabric I had!)

DelGirl · 02/04/2006 10:22

lol. schnapps, why not go for 1 3/4 Wink

hermykne · 02/04/2006 11:13

1 1/2 can look skimpy when drawn so 2 is better, unless u dont plan on drawing them that often,

RosieL · 12/04/2006 14:58

definitely double or double and a half, I had curtains made up by www.bedroominabox.co.uk and they said definitely at least double and the curtains actually look fabulous :)
