Tile Paint

The tiles in our new house are hidious but as don't come high on the "to do" list i'm considering painting them.

Has anyone else tried the proper tile paint?

How did they turn out?

And does it cover the grout - as the cowboy who put them up did a proper bodge job.

ooh
we did this and it turned out great
well - laods cheaper than new tile....

popsycal · 04/01/2004 19:32

if you want more detail (and tips for how i would do it better next time) then give me a shout!!

Lou33 · 04/01/2004 19:35

We did it at the place before this one, and they looked great. Easy to do I thought.

popsycal · 04/01/2004 19:39

dead easy
very reasonable
and yes, you can get a special stick thing ...bit like tippex...to smarten up the grout....
definitely worth doing if you dont want to retile
they do a range of colours too

You do need to take your time with the preparation and make sure the tiles are propery clean before you paint them. I painted our browny/orange bathroom white in our old house, stuck tile transfers to disguise the ramdom patterned ones and it looked SO much better. Certainly good enough for a quick fix although it's maybe not a long term solution.

I think it looks best if you make sure you end up with white grout at the end of it.

i agree with soup dragon
clean properly put primer on and first coat then sand with fine sand paper
also use a special roller for glass paint
we started using a gloss paint brush then changed to a roller - much better!!!

popsycal · 04/01/2004 20:22

you get a 'grouting stick thingy' from b & Q
if you cant find one, the HUGE b and q near us does them ...smaller ones dont seem to have them - i would send you one!

fairydust · 04/01/2004 22:04

pops - any tipe would be apreciated -

the ones that are up now are minging - the last owners made aright mess with the grout it's on some of tiles as well as in the grove - will the paint cover this.

thinking of getting the stuff from B&Q

clean the tile really well then dry them
go to b&q - look at tile paint
you will need aprimer and the colour you want
get a 'gloss roller' to ut tthe paint on with
roll the primer on then use fine sand paper on the wall (i think the instrcutions on the tin tell you to do this)
once dry (leave it longer than it tells you to)
use the roller again to apply the colour
leave to dry (for longer than you think)
then apply second coat in same way
get 'grtoung pen' (if you cant find one then let me know) to 'draw' over the grout
it will ook great
tomorrow i will check which paint we used if you remind me...tin in the garage

SoupDragon · 05/01/2004 08:01

Try sanding the grout off before you paint. If it sits proud of the tile, it will show through the paint in the same way badly filled walls show through.

We used International's range of tile paint. the fumes smell appalling so keep children away from it and make sure the room is well ventilated.

motherinferior · 05/01/2004 08:09

Can this work with eg giving one's little darlings a tile to paint for Uncle's Birthday...?

Crunchie · 05/01/2004 10:19

It's not that sort of tile paint motherinferior. For that you's be better off going to an art suppliers and getting porcelain paints (Pebeo 150 ar brilliant)

motherinferior · 06/01/2004 08:26

Back to the pebeo. The only place I've found remotely near here that sells it is a posh shop in posh Dulwich where each pot costs about the same as a dinner set!

Crunchie · 06/01/2004 12:54

Motherinferior if you would like a kit, I can see if I can get one, my local art shop sells a small kit (we did about 12 plates and 15 mugs using half) for £7.99. I could see if I can get one and send it to you?? Contact me on lucy at essentialpublishing dot co dot uk

Crunchie · 06/01/2004 12:56

checking on their website for London, John Lewis seems to stock it too. You would need to check for the actual product.

mckenzie · 08/01/2004 16:49

is there a product that I can use to piant bathroom floor tiles does anyone know? We've recently redecorated our whole house (major building work finished in December after 6 months) and we've made a mistake with the floor tiles in the family bathroom - they just look dirty all the time, I dont like them at all but they are all that i see whenever I go in there. Have absolutely no money left to replace them so thoguht about painting them.
We have electric underfloor heating in the bathroom so the paint must be heat resistant too. Does this sound feasible?

Lou33 · 08/01/2004 19:07

This says not really. The link might come up in the middle of the thread, so scroll up to start with the first message.

mckenzie · 08/01/2004 19:42

thanks very much Lou33.
