our baby (4 months) is currently in rib in our room..but now h's rolling it just oesnt work anymore.
we can't move him into his nursery as we need to have the window replaced first, plus replastering/rewiring etc done etc..and as it's on another floor i want to wait until he is consistently sleeping through so i'm not up and down the stairs all night.
we hav a beautiful coty bed that we have inherited but it's way too large to have in our bedroom so we need an interim solution

are there any medium sized cots available?..
th only ones i can find are all the same size and way too big!
would it be possibl/ awful to get a firm mattress for the travel cot and put him in there?

oh what to do!

i know we should have plannd this well in advance but it's just crept up on us..it's so true how fast they grow!

Where do you live? I have a swinging crib which is bigger than a moses basket but a lot smaller than a cot. I am just about to sell it - I am in Hertfordshire

babyonboard · 30/03/2006 12:36

hi..this is a swinging crib!it's long enough for him, but a bit too narrow..so he wakes up in the night and rolls over and wedges himself in funny positions..lol

thanks for the offer anyway!

i would suggest you speak find out what the recommendations are for maximum time use for a travelcot. Surely it can't be that bad to use it on a regular basis for a short time unless your baby is really heavy. How about getting in touch with the manufacturer/your health visitor/GP/SIDS organisation to get some varied advice. If there are no safety/health issues to using the travel cot for a month or so then it makes sense to use it if you already have one.

babyonboard · 30/03/2006 12:56

thanks..thats a great idea

i have just called graco (on hold for 10 minutes..grr!) and they said said they aren't allowed to give such advice..it's at our discretion..but to bear in mind they are not really intended for lengthy/permanent use.
i'll speak to the h.v later too

hard to belive they don't sell medium sized cots...hmm

My ds (6 mths) is in a travel cot at the mo in our room. I have put a matress in it to make it more comfortable. It's not ideal but it will have to do until ds moves into his cot next month. He doesn't seem to mind and sleeps well, so I try not to worry.

Ikea cots are small and cheap

babyonboard · 30/03/2006 13:14

hmm..hadnt thought of ikea..but they don't deliver (or do they!?) and we don't have a car..hehhee

babyonboard · 30/03/2006 13:15

daffo..thats reasuring...i cn't see there'd be much difference really if it has a good mattress in it

in your situation I would use a travel cot. I can't see any harm in it for the interim
(no Ikea don't deliver)

foxinsocks · 30/03/2006 13:18

ikea do deliver but you have to go there and buy it (and delivery costs can be expensive so check them out first)

we had a fantastic cot from ikea - we had a very narrow room and the cot was quite narrow and would fit your criteria of being 'middle' sized. It only cost about £50 (incl mattress, this was several years ago) and ds lasted in it for 2 years!

foxinsocks · 30/03/2006 13:19

something like this isn't enormous and isn't very wide either

okeydokeygirl · 30/03/2006 13:22

My instructions also say the travel cot is not intended for prolonged use but it doesn't explain why? Is it because prolonged use would wear it out sooner or because it is bad for the baby. I would imagine it is the former but would be interested to see why the manufacturer states this. One thing to consider is that you may find your back struggles a bit more with lifting the baby in and out of the travel cot - maybe that is why it is not recommended for prolonged use?

matnanplus · 30/03/2006 13:30

My friends baby slept in his travel cot from birth to just past his second birthday, it was his bed and he had no problems, she got a thick 3" piece of foam cut to size and put it on top of the supplied mattress and covered it in a single mattress protector and a sheet. It is in excellent condition even now.

What about just using the cot mattress on the floor with a bed guard for now?

Ikea deliver in store bought goods, don't think they do interent sales tho.

You can also get inflatable childrens beds with a raised area all the way around, might be useful for holidays later on?

jammydodger · 30/03/2006 13:49

our ds slept in a travel cot till he was one, and would have gone longer if we hadn't moved...I don't think there's a problem with it at all, really. Can't see any potential hazards.

babyonboard · 30/03/2006 15:29

thanks..i'll move him into the travel cot and try to get the renovations moving along faster.

i'm sure if DS is at all uncomfortable he'll let us know anyway..hehhee

ikea should so open an online store..i bet they'd mke a fortune!

ikea do a small cot and its quite cheap somewhere between £40 and £60 i think. it's not the pretteist of cots but if it is only to be used for a short time you don;t want to be spending £200 on one!

serenity · 01/05/2006 18:31

Both DS2 and DD slept in a travel cot from around 3 months until 18 months, when they went into a proper bed - we had no room for a proper cot, and needed to be able to move it quickly. The mattress on ours is quite soft but noisy as it's covered in plastic. I used a adult blanket folded to size as a pad and then a couple of sheets on top. They were fine.

FrayedKnot · 01/05/2006 18:55

YOu can get a mattress for a travel cot from Mamas & Papas, whihc fits on top of the travel cot base.

It fits most of them I think as they are usually a standard size.
