No! She's not heavy or tall enough for one without a back. The ones without a back give a weight and age limit - generally about 35lbs or age 3 - 4. At 17 months she needs to be in a proper seat - you can buy lightweight ones, but it needs to have a proper back to it.

MerlinsBeard · 27/03/2006 12:08

have u read the weight and age on taht seat biglips....Suitable from 15-36kg (33-79lbs) approx. 4 to 11 years
so no

at that age they need side protection as well.

carseats go by weight rather than age because children differ so much. i think u need to shop around for a seat that is lighter weight that u can trabsfer when needed

MerlinsBeard · 27/03/2006 12:09

of course i mean transfer not trabsfer!

mazzystar · 27/03/2006 12:09

hi there bl

people at ROSPA say \link{http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/types/index.htm\not for under fours}

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 12:10

Why do you have to carry it around with you? If it's for your mum's car, can't you leave it with your mum?

LIZS · 27/03/2006 12:18

Sorry her size/age doesn't come into it . She isn't heavy enough and won't be protected in an accident on just a booster.

biglips · 27/03/2006 12:20

well the one we've got \link{http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3752049.htm\an example} .. we sometimes borrow dps works van from his boss and need the baby seat with us but instead of asking my mum to pick us up all the time.. i like to make the effort to go and see her myself (by train) but gotta make my own way back home cos of no car seat in her car

i just thought if she can use it as she is not far from 33lbs... so thats why ive asked your advice

I'm sure there are lighter ones than the one you've got that still offer more protection than the booster seats.

DS is 28 months and about 29lb and I want him to stay in a seat with as much protectino as possible for as long as possible - preferably one with a 5 point harness.

PiccadillyCircus · 27/03/2006 12:25

Also being on a booster seat would make it easier for the child t undo it (another reason for a 5 point harness in my case Smile)

biglips · 27/03/2006 12:27

ill have a look on ebay if they got any on there (similar to one ive got now or a light one)

thanks for your advice everyone

MerlinsBeard · 27/03/2006 12:28

its along way from 29lbs to 33 lbs at that age esp if they get ill and lose abit as well.

took my eldest nearly a year to get from 29lbs to 33lbs, in fact, he has dipped under 33lbs again after being ill

maybe look for a high back booster? (will have alook for u )

MerlinsBeard · 27/03/2006 12:35

\link{http://www.britax.co.uk/Catalogue_2004/index.html\have a look here at the elite, evolva and evolva ultra}

Raggydoll · 27/03/2006 13:39

when ds was about two i couldnt drive so used to have to go in lots of different cars with ds so I bought a very light car seat from argos. it didn't have a 3 point harness but it did say it was suitable from 9mths. it wasn't an ideal situation (and I've since passed my test) but it meant whereever we went ds was always safely stapped in and couldnt get out.

they don't do the exact one now but they do a simliar one suitable from 9mths cost just 17.49! its called baby-start kombi car seat and converts to a booster seat from 3 years.

NannyL · 27/03/2006 19:38

most of those 'combination' car seats are in fact VERY UNSAFE in car crashes offering at loos less protection then conventional car seats.

I have yet to see a 9 - 36kg car seat (or even any car seat for more than 9 - 18kg) do well (or even ok) in independant crash tests...

they conform to BS regulations.... but then so do some car seats that would KILL a child during a crash

questionfromdh · 27/03/2006 19:39

i was advised that my 15kg 3 and a half year old should not go on a booster - even though he is the right weight...they said wait until he was six

I await an assessment of the new Britax Evolva model with interest as the Trio got panned by Which ?. We used another model which was similarly poorly rated - Storchenmuhle Starlight - in a hire car recently, thought it was a nicely padded seat and fitted well, although the harness was a faff. Then found out it was cr*p on our return Blush

popsycalindisguise · 28/03/2006 19:38

my mum uses a trio....thought it was fine at first but i am really not happy with it for ds2 (12 months) to go into.....

might get him a better seat for my mums and ds1 (3.75) might be better suited to it...

popsycalindisguise · 28/03/2006 19:38

anyone got a link to info on safest carseats?
need to buy one asap

Hulababy · 28/03/2006 20:02
