What's a reasonable life expectancy for a dishwasher?

Ours is on strike today - dh thinks maybe the pump has failed Sad

Really bad timing: It packed up overnight - with a full load in. And the boys had planned to make lasagne for lunch as a surprise, so I've spent half of Mother's Day washing up!

Not sure - we're currently between dishwashers Sad. Ours packed up a couple of weeks ago, and was going to cost £140 to repairShock, so we've decided to buy a new one. I think we'd had ours for at least 8 years, and it was passed on to us by friends, so at least 10 years old, I think. It was a Zanussi. You have my sympathies.

our dishwasher is STILL going strong and is now 21 YEARS old Shock

I say going strong.... the rubber that keeps the powder in perished years ago... but its still ok to use tablets.

and i can HONESTLY its the best dishwasher ive EVER used.... really.... everything is ALWAYS spotless first time... ALWAYS! Not like the modern expensive new dishwashers at the variouse homes that i have worked in over the years!

Ours isnt working too well, think we need to get another one once we have figured out how to get the door off, its a built in one. It was one of the cheaper ones, we have had it for 5 years and its been used more or less at least once every day.

Its still goes through all the motions but the stuff on the top shelf isnt getting clean and I quite often have to wash it by hand.

Have you checked the catch all basket ??

Filter. thats the word I was looking for.

Ours refuses to work if the basket is full.

flibbertygibbet · 26/03/2006 21:36

Hi! Yes, we've checked the filter, and emptied it as it was rather full Blush but it's still not working.

It's only 3.5 yrs old, but was a cheap one.

Our first dishwasher only lasted just four years and it was an expensive Smeg one, the pump went. Current dishwasher is a Miele and has been fine for just over three years and hoping to get a good deal more out of it yet.

Blandmum · 26/03/2006 21:45

mine has been going for over six years

Dannie · 26/03/2006 22:04

Ours is a Bosch and has been going for eight years

eidsvold · 27/03/2006 05:01

our landlady had a phillips that was in the house we rented - over 16 years old!!

Mine in my house was a westinghouse and it lasted about 6 years. Can't remember the new one but it is coming up to 6 years old!! But is still going strong so far!!

flibbertygibbet · 29/03/2006 20:05

£70 to get a man out to come and fix it.
At least it's working now!

I havent the room for one in our bijou little pad, but when I did have them I found 5 years and then they went.

longwaytogo · 12/04/2006 14:31

we have had 3 dishwashers in 8 years. last one only lasted us two years luckly we took out the 5 yr cover on it, nice man spent 2 1/2 hours taking the thing to pieces only to then decide he could do nothing with it - rang the insurance new one delivered 4 days later.

tegan · 13/04/2006 07:27

My dishwasher has lasted 8 years so far but in 8 years I have had 4 wahsin machines and 3 microwaves.

threebob · 13/04/2006 07:53

We've got one under 3 years old - it's been repaired 3 times (once was sort of our fault).
