I have heard that these are great and babies love them. Any opinions please? Also, on ebay, sellers proudly state that they are not Chinese imports - what's wrong with that if they have English as well, or am I missing the point?

We haven't got them but a good friend does and whenever they put it on any baby/child (and some of the daddies too) can't take their eyes off of it. ur friends little girl absolutely loves hers, hth Smile

I borrowed Baby Mozart from a friend and ds was enthralled by it at the sitting-up-but-not-yet-mobile stage.

I couldn't be arsed buying one after I'd returned it though, they are expensive (but I only looked on Amazon I think) and I dislike the whole "make your child a genius" thing too.

No idea what the Chinese import problem is, sorry.

We were given some as a Baby Shower gift and more since from my relatives in the USA as DVDs are easily postable. As a result we have loads.

If you don't know much abou them they are basically DVD's with no running story but a general theme, so you can dip in and out of them. They use hand puppets who don't speak but are very animated and provide the humour aspect - (DD adores the puppets), they are set to classical music, they feature video of toys dancing around the screen or being played with which sounds wierd but actually works quite well, the chosen toys fit in with what ever the theme to that dvd is. They also have video clips of the natural world, lots of sunsets and skyscapes and landscapes and vistas. There is often a poetry element, and an element which shows some form of art. They also on some of the DVD's have other languages featured alongside english and sign language too.

I'll give you a run down of the ones we have and my thoughts, in case it helps.

Baby Mozart - Lovely for little babies, and DD still enjoys it now on the odd occasion we've put it on now she's older. (she's 2 now) Many freind's babies have been completely captivated by it - its relaxing but stimulating at the same time.

Baby Van Gogh - Really lovely - glove puppet vincent van goat (I know) paints lots of pictures (vasn gogh classics) and it explores colours. My favourite is the red deer in his sparkly cape.

Baby Shakespeare - This one is all about poetry and s really good - DD loves it, lots of stirring poems but also lots of funny puppet clips and big trains.

Neighbourhood Animals - DD's favourite - goes through all the animals you might find in your home, garden, and local habitats. Highlights are old macdonald sung by ducks and pigs.

Baby Galilleio - Discovering the Sky. Quite relaxing to watch and goes through all aspects of sky watching from obviously sun and moon - right through to galaxies and stuff. The only annoying thing is the little boys voice (which announces each new theme) DD loves the bay kangarro and his mummy - great puppets shows in the extras.

Baby Da Vinci - new one we've just been given - its all about the body - and so far so good - DD loves it. It teaches the words for bodyparts simultaneously in english, french and spanish. DD has picked up new words from it already.

Baby Wordsworth - words around the house. Teaches words to do with everyday items at home. Also teaches the sign language for these items. The deaf lady from Desperate HOusewives does the signing. DD has been learning baby signs since she was 5 months and has learnt so many new signs from this having only seen it a few times so far (its new) so I'd say it definately works. Wordsworth the cat is very cute too.

Baby Macdonald - completely brilliant - DD adores it - only just got it as a birthday gift and she loves watching it and singing to all the songs. She loves the rooster best.

We're after World Animals next. My MIL has bought the whole set and ships them for different celebrations as presents so we'll have them all eventually. I wasn't sure as I don't like much TV but they have been useful as she's got bigger and IMHO are better than some of the crap on Cbeebies etc.

She doesn;t watch much TV or dvd's in reality but these are very good.

Have only heard negative stuff about Baby Bach and Baby Beethoven aparently they're a bit laboured but I've not seen either.

HTH sorry for waffling.

sharklet · 23/03/2006 23:18

wow I can really talk shit when I get my mouth in gear. Hadn't realised how much I had waffled Blush sorry

jabberwocky · 23/03/2006 23:24

Originally I didn't think too much about them and I didn't let ds watch any TV or DVD's when he was a baby. However, now at 2.7 he has pretty much given up on naps Sad and I was having a terrible time getting him to do "quiet time". He loves music and instruments so I found Baby Einstein "Meet the Orchestra". He loves watching it for quiet time and I still get an afternoon break!

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 23:28

CBeebies just as good.

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 23:29

My mom sent me two of them from the States. I'm going to flog them.

CarrieG · 23/03/2006 23:45

The 'Chinese import' thing - we bought a complete set of 10 on eBay for about £25 - bit of a bargain as individual ones nearly £20! The same set comes up quite regularly.

The covers are in Chinese, in a cheaper looking case than the ones you see in the UK. One or 2 of them are a bit 'glitch' ridden - eg. the navigation menu on one doesn't work & you just have to play the whole thing through, another one occasionally skips for no apparent reason. Possibly that's why your eBayer is making the point that theirs aren't Chinese!

Tbh for the use we got out of them (ds loved them for a few months at the sitting up but not crawling stage, then they were 'borrowed' by a mate & haven't been returned...) I reckon you might just as well get the cheapest version available: the actual content does appear to be just the same except that the menu is in Chinese as well as English. Before seeing the import boxset on eBay we'd bought an individual 'Baby Shakespeare' in the UK edition - it's identical.

threebob · 24/03/2006 03:23

Babies love lots of things but they are not always the best judges, that's why they have parents.

Why show them a toy on TV when they can have one in real life - and as for the classical music - well radio 3 is free, as is singing which is about a million times better.

Personally anything that goes on the TV that sends babies goggle eyed in wonder worries me.

I know someone who had them on 6 hours a day - her ds has a 3 second attention span, unless it's on the TV. He also has no imagination. Now I realise that 6 hours is very excessive - but it does make you think.

Chuffed · 24/03/2006 09:34

we have baby bach, baby newton, neighbourhood animals, baby mcdonald and world animals. Ds's favourite by far is neighbourhood animals, used to be baby mcdonald and she can almost sit through a showing of world animals. Not fussed on the other two.
We only watch them occasionally and she can sit through once unless she is feeling unwell (nearly 2yrs old) but she could sit and read stories for hours, like 1 1/2 hours at about 10mth old so none of the issues threebob was talking about.

Chuffed · 24/03/2006 09:35

Can you get them out of the libary to try for your child, I got out neighbourhood animals to see if she liked it first.

Highlander · 24/03/2006 12:06

baby Einstein DVDs are just TV by a different name. There is no evidence that they improve your sprog's IQ in the long term.

sharklet · 24/03/2006 21:03

Your right higlander! They are good though and I find them muh more bearable for me to watch than tweenies.

expatinscotland · 24/03/2006 21:05

I want to get medieval on The Tweenies. I'd love to shove Jake's oversized head in a microwave.

:o

beansprout · 24/03/2006 21:09

Highlander - that's what I always suspected. Ds has always been transfixed by anything at all that has been on the tv but we don't walk around saying "oh, he just loves the news". We just don't have it on. It worries me that he stops whatever else he is doing to stand and stare.

mommie · 24/03/2006 21:36

we have most of the baby einstein series and world animals is a huge hit...but nothing like Spot the Dog (top favourite) and of course teletubbies. but i do think the baby einstein dvds are more educational than the others. teletubbies doesn't teach anything really, and spot is cute, but dd says words after baby einstein is on and picks up on single words a lot when they are spoken. she also likes the shapes of things like bubbles and repeats words like that too when she sees animals splashing around
