SOme of you probably received these for Christmas.
I have heard friends swear by the GHD ones - are they really worth £90 or so compared with other brands? (I had a shot of Hair tools and thought they were pretty good.)
If so which model do you recommend? ( I understand GHD make three different types)
Thanks .

I recieved some vidal sasoon ones for xmas but everyone keeps telling me that they'll ruin my hair !!! Mine are really heavy, but they do the job o.k

Clairabelle · 26/12/2003 23:58

My sister uses GHD and they are fantastic sorry don't know which type though.

There was a thread about this here
I've got an ancient set with metal plates (and crimpers!) from boots that still do the trick, but if i go in the rain i end up looking like Crystal Tips!

my tip would be to ask your hairdresser to recomend one or if like me,and you do not visit a hairdressers pop into one and ask them or at a hair/beauty suppliers, sally's, aston and finchers etc. I get a brochure from sally's and they have a variety of ceramic straigtners for less than you would spend in normal shops.

Just make sure you condition your hair very well and use some product in your hair that will protect it from heat styling.

I've got GHD straightners. Didn't know there was more that one type. Mine were £70 bought from an internet site. It's worth checking out different sites as you may get them cheaper than in the shops. They're really fast and do the job so much better than the babyliss straightners I used to have. I don't use any heat protective spray and I would say that my hair feels in better condition than when I didn't use straightners.

CountessDingDongDrac · 29/12/2003 21:45

GHD fabulous, don't bother with any others!

I got these for Christmas and I'm really pleased with results compared to my old non-ceramic straighteners. BUT they are really destroying the condition of my hair. I've been using a leave-in conditioner to no effect. I do have coloured hair so that probably doesn't help.
Has anyone found anything that works to protect the hair?

Festivefly · 18/01/2004 15:38

Mine are superb, my sister has GHD's we have compared them and there is no difference honestly.
They are called complements?????????? and they were £20 from Selfridges

nutcracker · 18/01/2004 15:40

codswallop · 18/01/2004 15:46

Mog · 18/01/2004 16:18

Nutcracker, me too and I'm surprised how quickly. I don't want to stop using them, hence the post to try and find something that works to protect the hair.
Anyone any ideas?

I've got some from Babyliss - and I use Paul Mitchell "Heat and Seal" spray to stop my hair drying out.

SHIREENSMOM · 18/01/2004 16:33

ive got ones called called ceramic tech i got them from my hairdresseres and they where £95 but they where worth every penny ive got long hair that is very kinky in the mornings and they are brilliant. ive heard that the ghd ones blow up i seen it on watchdog

SHIREENSMOM · 18/01/2004 16:34

is that paul mitchel heat and seal stuff any good?

jac34 · 18/01/2004 16:34

I had some Andrew Collinge ones as well, they came with a product called "No kinks straightener".
I've used this whenever I've used the straightener, it is suposed to make the hair smoother, it seems to be quite slimey, so perhaps this stops the hair drying out.
Also, perhaps a "leave in conditioner" would work.

GHD themselves produce a protective spray that is (supposed) to be pretty good - SIL uses it and gets that really glossy look. She started after her hair dried out with them. I use them too and have to say they don't dry my coloured hair out at all. But and this I think is the difference - I have fine, fly-away hair that is wavy and it only needs a light, quick skim over the top after drying. SIL has heavier, coarser hair and it takes a much longer application to sort out.

(After writing this down I now feel like a twit as obviously the longer they are on your hair the more they will dry it out!! And I am sure everybody could have worked it out!)

I think the different GHD types refers to the width of the irons and that is dictated by the length of your hair and the style you are after.

Also when I bought mine was advised to not use leave-in conditioners or product as this can make the condition worse - basically I think because you are putting chemicals on the hair and then burning them in-situ so to speak. Exception being heat activated products which are specifically designed for that. (I think I have seen a very reasonable range in Sainsburys BTW).

Hi there, depending on your hair type, there are diferent hair products to suit. I would suggest an oil gel or serum in the hair if you have thick or frizzy hair. Thin hair should use a spray protecter as the oil bassed may be too heavy. Fudge do a product called erekt which is a heat actived straightner it can be used with dryers aswell. If you have afro-carribean hair, I would recomend frizz free oil gel or fudge erekt.
Here are some products, read the blurb and match with your hair type.
Sexy Hair GHD oil and Thermal Prtector HQ Glazing
Paul Mitchel Heat Seal
For anyone interested, I found this place that has GHD stuff at discount prices.
the Fudge that I talked about can be found here It is a hair site that has loads of stuff for hair including the actual straightners.

I cannot stress the importance of maintaining a good hair regime!(Iknow I sound bossy... sorry)
