Second baby - what products would be helpful?

We didn't bother with a moses basket first time round but I'm thinking that it might be worth having a safe place downstairs to pop newborn when getting DS1 ready to go out or playing rugby. What would you advise?

I'd also like to use a papouse for baby but last time my back couldn't take the strain...any recommendations on which one to choose?

Finally swaddling....I used muslins last time but have seen those velcro ones. Can anyone advise...baby due in June so might be hot over the summer?

Any other suggestions gratefully received.

instead of the moses basket (which is expensive and doesnt last long) you could let baby sleep in the pram

but we always put dd2 upstairs cos it was hard keeping dd1 quiet enough to let dd2 sleep downstairs

and it stopped dd1 poking and prodding dd2 while she was trying to sleep

(but dd1 was only 2)

We got a pram that converts to pushcair (Silver Cross) & used the carrycot bit (it comes with a separate stand) instead of a moses basket at first.
FWIW I tried the velcro type swaddling thing & it was pants. Too small & the material was so stretchy it wouldn't swaddle tight enough. HTH Smile

I had this for DS1 and will be using it for #2, works as a travel cot too.

Ds was in it until he was about 8mths (but he is short)

I bought a fisher price take along swing this time which rocks dd. it lets me give ds some time and i know dd is safe.

sweetkitty · 21/03/2006 13:37

Would second the travel cot idea, I have 20mo and 2mo DDs, travel cot keeps DD2 safe from DD1 she has learned not to lob things over it now, have a Fisher Price Swing like Nemo very good so far DD2 falls asleep in it.

I'd watch the carry cots (using them for extended sleeping) unless they have a special mattress the support isn't great or recommended for babies to sleep in ( unless it's out and about, I mean not the night time naps)
bibs, muslins were useful for second child, I also second the swing, I didn't want to buy one, and tried to borrow one without any luck. WIll prob buy for number 3 though

MAMYB - the link takes me to the home page....is it the little green one?

We have a swing we bought for DS but he hated it...still doesn't like swings much. Have to say DS hated the bumbo, the bouncy chair and virtually anything that contained him. Maybe DC2 will be more tolerant?

Blimey that's useless sorry.

put newborn carry cot in the search field and it should bring up a blue gingham bag - it's a foldout carry cot honest :). Called Babymoov (naff name).

Hana that's interesting about some not being suitable for babies sleeping, is there anymore info about that I hadn't heard that and DS was in this as his bed until he went to the big cot.

hana · 21/03/2006 15:28

meandmyboy - we didn't want to buy a moses basket for our first as we knew she wouldn't be in it for v long - so we though she could sleep in the pram( spent so much on it I thought great, it can be a bed too) with all the info that came with it there was info about using it as a 'bed' and they didn't recommend it unless you bought a special mattress to fit inside the carry cot bit - which was about the price of the cheapest moses basket.
Buy the moses basket is ready for number 3 so we did get our moneys worth...and the lovely exprensive pram replaced with an umbrella fold buggy early on......so that was the waste after all
bit long sorry

Sling, definitely a good plan. I have a hugabub that DS2 loves being in - have taken him on the tube and bus in it too and he just snores gently in it.

Melpomene · 21/03/2006 16:00

I have a huggababy sling which was a godsend when dd2 was tiny - it's easy to breastfeed while the baby is in the sling. while dd2 was in the sling I could do activities with dd1 (painting, baking, pretending to be an aeroplane), thus keeping both of them happy.

First time round, when dd1 was tiny, I had a BabyBjorn which hurt my back. The Huggababy is loads bett`er.
