child-safe remedy for taking care of silverfish problem!!

its only in our downstairs bathroom, at night, we have an insane amount of silverfish (100+). we dont see them anywhere else in the house (the other 2 bathrooms).

i dont want to use anything that may leave harmful residue or odors around (as ds is 21 months old and does often follow me in that bathroom) -

any ideas on what else might be good for riding ourselves of this little things? (we've been hoovering the rug regularly, washing the rugs and making sure nothing damp goes in there (i used to dry the mop in that bathroom)...)

thanks!:)

hi not sure but my friend had them and had to get environmental health out to spray and she had a 3yo at the time. i think i heard someone say about herbs which keeps them away but not sure which ones!! sorry.

There are a couple of natural insecticides \link{http://www.pesthelp.co.uk/weshop/Silverfish.asp\here} .

It's usually a sign of damp too, does your floor have a damp proof membrane?

emmawill · 23/03/2006 11:12

Oh their horrible like things aren't they? I think they do normally go where its damp, you have awfal lot I've seen the odd one in the kitchen but its normally if I've been too busy to mop the floor Blush. Have you checked your bath isn't leaking anyway?

Good luck getting rid of them.

lunarx · 23/03/2006 12:59

the floor, although carpeted (YUCK!) does feel damp.

Have you err looked under the carpet? I think they will be hard to get rid of with carpet there..the chances are that if it is quite an old bathroom extension that it is damp

lunarx · 23/03/2006 13:11

we havent looked under it.. it was just carpeted last march (before we moved in)..well re-carpeted. pulling it up for a look isnt really an option... i guess for now (until we move, which isnt too far away), i'll just have to keep it dry and clean (since i cleaned the heck out of it the other day, there havent been as many..)

they are creepy though!

Sounds like that's all you can do, hopefully it will keep them down and I guess don't let your ds go in there without you. Is it a rented house? I hate carpets in bathrooms as their going to get damp better having floors that can just be mopped really and rugs.

lunarx · 23/03/2006 13:20

it is rented... (if we owned it, none of the bathrooms would be carpeted, its gross!)

luckily we dont see them during the day, only at night, once ds is sleeping..

I think if you vacuum ferociously (have to empty the vac obviously) and maybe use a cedaroil product they should be kept down.they can eat textiles and wallpaper glue

emmawill · 23/03/2006 13:28

The thought of them is making my skin crawl. Good luck Grin
