Can anyone recommend a decent carpet cleaner?

Was thinking of a cheaper option (i.e. No wet wonder foam!!), but not sure whether a proper carpet cleaner would be better in the long run?...

I was thinking about getting a carpet cleaner, but before we bought one we ended up hiring one from Focus (I got desperate and paranoid that my house smelt of wee after potty training). It was fantastic and only cost about £20 for 24 hours. I decided against buying my own, which wouldn't have been as good, and just hiring them a couple of times a year or as and when.

Try the Rug Doctor It's exactly what SurferMum said. Its hireable (such a word?!) from Homebase.
We've used it and its excellent.

If you want a spray cleaner to do smaller jobs then get the "carpet power" by ozkleen. Amazing stuff. Smells nice as well.

I am looking for a cleaner to do the whole room, but this sounds good - where can I get it?

We've got a Simac steam cleaner. No chemicals!

Nbg · 18/03/2006 15:27

We have a Bissel lightweight one (think it's about £90)

It's pretty good but if you buy their shampoo it costs £7 a bottle and I found we were going through it quite a bit as the tank on it isn't very big.

IMO I think you can see better results from getting someone out to do it.

SleepySuzy · 18/03/2006 18:39

So how good are these steam cleaners?

OP posts:

used regularly, we love our steam cleaner! we use it on our vinyl-flooring in the kitchen and bath as well.

SleepySuzy · 18/03/2006 18:41

Have you used it on carpets?

OP posts:

we bought it b/c this rental flat has carpet in all the rooms except the bath and kitchen, suzy.

the first time we used it, we needed to go over the carpets 3x, b/c they were very dirty.

now, we just do it once a season - more often in the hall, monthly.

we also don't wear shoes in the house except slippers.

i HATE carpets.

SleepySuzy · 18/03/2006 18:51

Sounds fab, I might invest in one of those, then dh could use it on the cars, too!

ss..if it was the carpet spray you asked about....I got it from Tesco..Just with the usual household cleaning stuff. They also do a "power bath" and "power kitchen" Actually we also use the power bath. Amazing stuff and the shower shines afterwards (little elbow grease needed which is a bonus!!) but beware it is quite strong smelling. Can take your breath away!.

SleepySuzy · 19/03/2006 09:41

Looks like I'm off to Tesco today!
