Fairy lights - safe to leave on at night in child's bedroom?

Need a nightlight for my 5 year old who has the fear of the dark. Just don't seem to be any decent plug in night-lights for children out there. Figure fairy lights would be perfect for my needs (the plug socket is behind furniture) but are they safe or a terrible fire hazard?

I used to have some that ran off 2 AA batteries, which dd1 loved. From Sainsburys I think - little red hearts.

I'd be cautious about leaving lights on that're plugged into the mains (annual Xmas row with dh!) - they are supposed to be dodgy.

LED or battery ones should be fine

And they are actually very bright too! I had some up in Ds's room when he was very young, but they were too bright to actually use for the purpose of fending off the darkness just enough iyswim? they made it like daylight in there Hmm

We have a couple of pretty ones that are AA run. The walls in the girls' room isn't strong enough for curtains so we've decorated the window with boas and lights. They're not too bright and the girls love them.

This LED night light looks similar to one we got cheap from Sainsburys a while back.

Generally LEDs are likely to be more reliable and much cooler than regular bulbs.

Hmm, yes, raven, we also have the christmas light row.....

We have some glow hearts from Tiger, which change colour, battery run - really lovely - just don't last long if you leave them on all night.

I had wondered if they would be too bright, solo.........and confuddled, I must admit I did have some battery run ones around christmas but again - I was turning them off so have no idea how long they would last being left on all night? How long do your last?

I have noticed that M & S sell such pretty fairy lights around their bedroom stuff, Which puzzles me.

I guess I'll aim for some pretty battery powered ones. And LED, but I don't think I like the light LED gives off.........

Jut realised, cruel, that I would like one of those but we don't have an exposed plug socket so that won't work in dd's room.

Have you seen the ikea 'ghost' night light? You can charge it up and it glows all night.

CumberdickBendybatch · 31/08/2012 00:57

Ikea 'spoka' nightlight. Works on the mains but is rechargeable so will last a night not unplugged in. Try ebay.

CumberdickBendybatch · 31/08/2012 00:58

Ha, x posts :)

NoComet · 31/08/2012 00:58

DD also uses battery powered hearts. One of the 100 things that need endless AA batteries recharging in this house.

both girls have fairy lights round their rooms at Xmas, but as they get older they say they are too bright to leave on.

SoggySummer · 31/08/2012 01:03

We have a lightbulb in the ceiling light that has a dim(night light setting) and normal setting. I just flick the wall switch on and its either dim or bright, flick the switch again and its does the alternative.

Not as pretty as fairy lights but does the trick. Its too dim to read with really but light enough to comfort those scared of the dark or negotiate your way across the millions of toys across the bedroom floor.

I have no idea what its called, where DH bought it or where you get one, but if you want to know, just say and I will ask DH when he is back home at the weekend.

Our eldest also has an LED clip on reading lamp on her bed. It's so bright I couldn't sleep with it on, but it doesn't bother her in the slightest.
