my dd is 8 months at end of march and not yet 9 kg, but very tall (off the centile charts) i would like to get a forward facing car seat so that she can stretch her legs, but they say for 9 month olds and 9kg. do i have to wait. she can sit up straight and is strong, but not very heavy (about 17.5lb).

has anyone started using a forward facing car seat before the recomended 9 months/9kg?

Sorry but rearward is recommended until 9kg dure tot he potential force on the neck in an accident and in some countries it is even heavier/older. afaik there are no forward facing seats for sale in UK that can go forwards before that. Have you thought about one which is slightly larger and fixes in the car but could face rearwards until she is heavy enough and then turn around like Britax First Class and , I think, a Bebeconfort one.

Forevermore - it's perfectly ok and normal that her legs bend alittle in the seat you have as she grows so long as her head's not off the top end - if that's the case then she needs another seat. Providing her head's still well supported then she should stay rearfacing until 9kg - as already said at a lesser weight she could be serevely injured in an accident. It's a pain I know but honest she's not as uncomfortable as you imagine her to be Smile

as long as she isn't taller than her seat then she's fine!
I did a lot of research when ds was the same age as he is very tall, and quite heavy.
he was only just beneath the 9kg limit when I changed him to forward facing and a bit young... but apparently the guides are more to do with their development... they should be able to sit for a certain amount unassisted, which means that their neck strength is better iyswim?

before they are 9kg their heads weigh more than their body, and if they are forward facing in a car crash you are likely to brake their neck

Under NO circumstances should you put a child under 9kg in a forward facing seat. Ypu will notice rear facing seats go up to 13kg, and as long as their eyes are not over the top they are fine

HAVING BENT LEGS WONT KILL THEM BUT BEING IN A FORWARD FACING CAR SEAT IN A CRASH MIGHT
