Question about the Wilkinet baby sling....

... I found an immaculate Dusty Blue soft cord Wilkinet baby sling in a charity shop for £2:50!

So, of course, I bought it, i am 36 weeks pregnant and don't have a baby sling, but the thing is...

I can barely do it up without a baby in it, but I am 36 weeks pregnant. I am usually about a size 18. It says on the website that women who are size 20 or above are advised to buy the extra long straps, but I don't know which type this sling is, it was just in a basket in a charity shop (still cannot believe my luck!)

Am I likely to be able to use this sling after I have the baby (and thus deflate a little), or shall I just pass it on to my much thinner friend who is in labour as we speak?!

Keep hold of it! I loved my Wilkinet but didn't know they had extra-long-straps version (think the ordinary ones are long enough). Have another go when you've had the baby and don't have the bump to think about. I doubt I could have knotted it over my bump thinking about it now.

i have the one with extra long straps and they are a crazy length but i think you can send you're sling off and have the strap extended for a small charge.

I can't see why you'd have a problem using it once your baby arrives.

You'll be able to see if it's the extra-long version - each strap will have an extra couple of inches attached and the seam is visible.

Try it out with a teddy bear (or a cat, for added realism Wink and get as much practice as you can before the baby is born, otherwise you may struggle if you still haven't got the hang of it once your baby is here. I hated it, felt like I needed to be an eight-armed contortionist, but I know a lot of people who have loved it.

normal length that is

hoxtonchick · 13/03/2006 20:34

are you tying it properly? you have to follow the instructions really really carefully until you get the hang of it. i threw a minor strop with mine when dd was a couple of weeks old as it just wouldn't go round me.... read the instructions again & it was ok.

i found mine a lot comfier than our baby bjorn (which dp preferred). i'd definitely keep it until you've had your baby.

Wilkinet are fab. Definitely keep it. I am about a size 16 (with ginormous boobs) and didn't have any problems with the normal sized one.

MIne was fine on me I was at least a size 18/20 at the time. It didn't fit DH who has a 48inch chest and huge shoulders.

I did my own adjustment so it would fit us both, but i doubt you would need to do that.

Have a look \link{http://www.wilkinet.co.uk/Videos.asp\here} to make sure you are tying it right.

I've had lots of slings with my 3- and the wilkinet is definitely one of the most comfortable. You get used to the straps as well- I'm sure it'll be fine once the baby is here if you can just about do it up now. You don't want the straps too long or you end up having to uck them in. I think their website has training videos now!.

I had no problems using mine when I was a size 16 (and it has normal length straps). I loved it. Looks a bit confusing but once you've used it a couple of times you'll get the hang of it. Good luck :)
