Can I put a car seat in a Smart Car?

I'm thinking of getting a Smart Car but have just found out the passanger air bag can't be disabled so wouldn't be able to put a car seat in for my 6 year old DD. Does anyone know if it can be disabled or should I just give up on the whole idea? Thanks.

I thought it was only for rear facing cars eats you needed to disable the airbag. Forward facing was ok. I may be wrong though

Yes I was right, here

Thank you that, and for the extra effort involved in Googling it for me.

glaikitfizzog - where does it say airbags are okay for children in the front? could you link to the right page for me please? i always that they exploded at the wrong height or something (which doesn't really make any sense as the point of a child seat is to make the child the right height...) so were still dangerous.

i always disable the front airbag if i need to carry a child there.

Its on the page I linked to. If you scroll down to the part that says over 3s can be carried in the front seat with an appropriate restraint. It doesn't say the airbag must be disabled as it does for the under 3s. And that is only if they are in rear facing seat. As long as its forward facing, you are complying with the law. No idea about the different safety aspects other than extended rear facing is safer.

You are lucky to have a car where it is easy to disable the front passenger airbag. We have to take our to the garage to do ours.

I always thought airbags should be disabled if children are in the front as otherwise the airbag goes off in their face rather than their chest & therefore causes a terrible amount of damage.

GlaikitFizzog · 26/08/2012 23:01

I don't know about the safety side, but the law only states the airbag must be disabled if a rear facing seat is used for the under 3s on the front passenger seat.

I'm sure there will be safety stats out there somewhere, along with the stats on different types of car or car seats being safer than others.

OP you might want to look into the safety side of having a smart car and using a car seat.

Seems Smart can provide a code.

i see what you mean glaikit, it hadn't occured to me that if it doesn't actively say you can't then you can!

i must confess that i thought what onedev said was true.

might have a look at that smart forum link and find out more...

another page from the same website

"They can be used in the front or rear of the car, but it is safer to put them in the rear, especially if there is a passenger airbag in the front."

thenightsky · 27/08/2012 13:01

Not sure how you can put it in the back when its a 2-seater. I take it you are looking at buying the For-Two.
