I have saved for this for ages, finally got it from Tesco the cheapest one which was 89 quid where you press buttons. But we don't have wi fi at home and I can't register it. Feel very sad. Like at christmas when batteries were forgotten.

Don't know what to do now, will I be able to do it in star bucks say? Does that mean I'll have to go there everytime I want to buy a kindle book? Oh dear. Please advise in short sentences thank you!!!!

Do you have internet at all at home?

If you have a pc or laptop on line then you can just plug it into that.

Yes, you need to go on line to down load books.

you can plug it into the computer with the cable supplied and do it that way

Trebuchet · 23/08/2012 22:24

I have a feeling that with the new cheap kindle you can't actually set it up via the computer, it has to be wifi - my FiL was given one for Christmas, and ended up getting wifi at home just so he could use it. I really think they should make it clear on the packaging before you buy it that you need wifi.

But in case I'm wrong, maybe you should contact Amazon to double-check, and they may have some suggestions.

It sounds like you have a computer - go to the Amazon website, and click the 'help' button in the top right-hand corner of the home page. That will bring up various options, including Kindle support, and I think if you click through you will eventually get to a page where you can either email them for help or put in your number and ask them to call you. I've never had to do it, but I gather they do usually call back pretty quickly (not sure if it's a 24-hour service, though - you may have to wait for tomorrow morning).

If the worst comes to the worst, you may need to take it to Starbucks/McDs or somewhere to set it up and download books. Or think about getting wifi at home...

There's some stuff here about transferring items to a Kindle using usb cable (ie plugging in to the computer).

CheddarsintheRunning · 23/08/2012 23:14

Could you take it back to tesco and ask advice?

You might be able to exchange it for one with 3G which means you can access the Internet from anywhere. Will cost a bit more though.

exexpat · 23/08/2012 23:18

You can transfer stuff by USB, but you can't register a new kindle, by the look of it. Found this conversation on the Amazon customer board.

You can set it up using free wifi in a pub or cafe.
