If you can afford it, go for Miele, or Bosch. Not cheap in the short term, but both brands (especially Miele) are known for their reliability, so probably cheaper in the long term. We had 2 cheaper bands conk out after 2 or 3 years. We have a Miele which must be getting on for 8+ years old now.

Caerlaverock · 14/08/2012 11:50

Thanks both of you. Current machin has lasted 15 years!

Just replaced my ancient Bosch with an LG

Evasmum12 · 14/08/2012 12:02

If you go on appliances online, you can compare washers, and they have a top 10 list. I bought one of their top 5 washers (a Candy one) and so far so good!

RikersBeard · 14/08/2012 12:03

Miele Miele miele.

Caerlaverock · 14/08/2012 17:44

Would love Miele but too expensive.

I can totally recommend LG.

grendel · 14/08/2012 18:17

Friend who is something of an expert on washing machine technology (he's an engineer/inventor type guy) swears by LG direct drive models. Apparently really well made and direct drive technology is much more robust and quieter than conventional machines.

We took his advice and bought an LG 1480 earlier this year when our old Miele died and we LOVE it! It is so quiet, so quick, so easy to use, it even plays a little tune when it's finished. We bore all visitors to our house with a little guided tour just so that they can admire it too.

Minstrelsaremarvellous · 14/08/2012 18:26

Look up Marks electrical online and they are brilliant - call about prices as they are cheap and deliver the next day. I saved a fortune with them getting a Miele with a 10yr guarantee!

Evasmum12 · 14/08/2012 20:09

Grendel - you just reminded me! The last house I lived in had an integrated washer dryer, and it played jingle bells when it finished. God I hate that song now haha.

That was a baumatic btw and it was crap!

Caerlaverock · 15/08/2012 11:04

Arses the lg I want isn't wavailable for 2weeks. Wavering over Bosch or saving cash on zanuussi

If you can afford the Bosch I'd get it. I couldn't afford one and bought a cheapo Hotpoint one and it is dreadful. I will be amazed if it lasts the rest of the year and the drier bit broke after two uses.

Caerlaverock · 15/08/2012 11:14

That is my worry fizzy. Guy I spke too said we live in a throwaway society so not to worry... Wtf .

Ok Bosch it is

When we were looking to buy a new washer, we asked the local repair guy for recommendations, and for what to avoid. He gave us a list of machines he gets called out to most - Hotpoint and, I think, Zanussi were on the list.

He suggested Bosch or Meile, we went for a cheaper Bosch model and have had no problems in 4 years. MIL bought the same machine - also no issues.

On a slight aside, years ago (in the late 70s!) my folks had a Meile hoover. That hoover was still going strong in 2000. They had given it to me by that stage and I reckon I would still have it if I hadn't moved countries.

They are more expensive because they are made to last - the companies don't expect too much repeat business!

BaronessBomburst · 15/08/2012 11:52

Miele. I've had mine so long I can't even remember. It's also survived an international move, storage, lots of flights of stairs, and a newborn who threw up after every feed and leaked every nappy. I love it so much I gave her a name: Amelia. And bought her a tumble dryer for company: Matilda. not very inventive Grin

Caerlaverock · 15/08/2012 17:14

Thank you all for help at this stressful time! I have a Bosch coming on Friday
