Revamping bathroom

Am thinking of revamping our bathroom and downstair toilet - the works - new bathroom suites, complete re-tile and possibly move things around.

Anyone done this recently? Am wondering if I should attempt to manage this myself ie. buy the suite I want, employ plumber / tiler or to go for specialist bathroom company.

Also any idea what sort costs associated with this sort of project? Both rooms are tiny - would you need about £5K for both?

You could do both for 5k managing it yourself I have done both in ther last couple of years.Don't be put off b and q and the like they are really good now.Buy an inexpensive suite and add detail with taps and tiles

I don't think you need that much - I have watched lots of the Property Ladder shows recently and think I am an absolute expert now Grin you could do both for about 3k I'd say.

I only have our budget planning sheets to hand, not the final costs, but we completely redid our bathroom for less than £1k, including

new suite and fitting
minor layout changes
replastering whole room
retiling round bath, sink, loo, shower cubicle
painting bits not tiled
laying hardboard and vinyl tiles
new lighting, towel rails, cabinet, mirror, storage etc

To be fair we worked very hard - shopping around for products, employing separate plumber/tiler & plasterer, doing the prep and painting ourselves, but at that point we had less money than time!

A specialist bathroom compnay is a good idea if you want flashy things (built in linen basket, underfloor heating etc) and may be much less stressful for you but you will pay through the nose for it.

NB the \link{http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/images/product/smallImage/5034109478601_pb1_1_l.jpg\Madrid} takeway suite from B&Q is an absolute bargain and has lovely taps. And try Screwfix, Jewson, Wickes, Ikea etc for tiles, towel rails, lights etc - can work out v good value if you know what you want.

Just a thought!

Thanks for all the tips - must go and check B&Q out - I'm decidedly nervous about measuring up on my own so perhaps might pick out a few suites and get plumber in and let him see if it will all fit.

If I could do it all for £3K, it would be FAB!

Think it depends on the size of room, what preparation is needed and how much you want to change the layout and plumbing. We had a main bathroom and ensuite done for a bit more than that but it was everything in , not an off the peg suite, a wall needed rebuilding, new window etc. It was all done through a maintenance company, as we were abroad and overseen by a friend. If you are in situ you should be able to manage it yourself but do take advice before buying a suite as it may not be the most appropriate for your needs and they may find you a better one at trade prices.
