Hi there. I have to tow my car to Manchester. I havent got a clue what to do or where to start. Would a vauxhall Astra be alright to tow it? What do I need to do? Are you allowed to tow a car with a normal car that distance? As you can tell I haven't got a clue about these things & would appreciate any advise given!Thankyou

Anyone? I know there are a lot of caravaners out there?

Check all the details, there are a lot of legalities to cover:

Vehicle being towed must be taxed, insured and have a current MOT (if required)
Person in towed vehicle must be licenced and insured to drive that vehicle
Person in towing vehicle must have suitable licence for towing over 750Kg
The vehicle combination must be under 3500kg unless suitable licence/category held

I'm pretty sure a solid tow bar will be required, tow ropes are intended for emergencies only and 200 miles doesn't count as an emergency.

The trailer rules state that the 'trailer' cannot be heavier than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle; if that follows for towing another vehicle, an Astra is highly unlikely to be legal for towing an MPV. I wouldn't recommend it anyway, unless it's got one of the more powerful engines. It's not going to thank you for it anyway.

I would suggest the best option is to hire a small car transporter (about £100 for a day).

Why does it need to be towed there? Repairs following breakdown? Being sold? Displayed at a car show?

Thankyou mittens, great advice. We looked into a car transporter which is £130 plus petrol. Managed to get a couple of quotes for around £250 to do the job which is good. The reason it's going is because the engine is not working & it's under warranty with the engine supplier in Manchester.
