baby with dry skin on face - what to put on it?

Ds - the poor wee soul - has really chapped and dry skin on his face - a combination of ferocious dribbling and the freezing wind we have just now! I have been putting vaseline round his mouth and chin where the skin has chapped, but the whole of his face is dry. What can I put on the rest of his skin?

Diprobase is good.

Poor little things, its horrible for them isn't it, all red and dry. We have been using E45 cream (prescribed by GP) and it works well. I use aqueous cream to wash his face with too, as it leaves a film of moisturiser on his face even when its washed off.

edodgy · 03/03/2006 21:52

oilive oil is also good.

Miaou · 03/03/2006 21:53

Yes dh wondered about olive oil. Thanks for the other ideas too.

Try Aveeno

you can get it at the chemist, it's wonderful and my GP says it works especially well on babies

another vote here for aqueous cream for washing, and E45 to rub in. cant get any better IMO

popsycalindisguise · 03/03/2006 22:14

plive oil
if there is the slightest chance it might be eczema, vaseline will make it worse (apparently)

I thought ds2 had teething/dribble rash for ages and it turned out to be eczema....

tarantula · 03/03/2006 22:15

coconut oil is fab I find. Just dont get it on any clothes cos its murder to wash out.

Miaou · 03/03/2006 22:17

oooh I didn't know that about vaseline, thanks. I'm pretty sure it is because of the dribbling/wind but will keep an eye on that.

it doesnt let the skin 'nreathe apparently...I had been smothering ds2 with it....

MerlinsBeard · 03/03/2006 22:20

another vote for diprobase here

Tried aqueous and its not as good as diprobase IMO

Miaou · 03/03/2006 22:27

Thanks for that popsycal. Ds's sore bits don't look anything like that thank goodness. However will stop using the vaseline, try olive oil to start with, then go on to your other suggestions if there's no improvement!

HV & Dr suggested Vaseline when DD was teething & drooling a lot, poor little soul looked like she'd been badly burned!
Diprobase or olive oil if it's not too bad.

Aveeno - cleared up DS's a treat and he had it everywhere now he peachy smooth and super kissable!!
