Mine are very cheap carpets and are filthy. I got them professionally cleaned last year but it cost £70 which seems a lot. How do you keep your carpets clean?

I own a Karcher steam cleaner. I steam clean them every other month and they're always filthy. I'd LOVE to get rid of them but this is a rental flat so no can do.

I hate carpets w/a purple passion.

We hire a steam carpet cleaner from Focus when we need to. My friend introduced me to it. Its £15 to hire but you get it for 24 hours ,i think, so could share with a couple of mates and it works out quite cheap.

expatinscotland · 02/03/2006 20:47

I'm tellin' you, carpets are just beyond minging. I found out some people have them in their kitchens and bathrooms and just about died of disgust. YUK!

Go for the best steam cleaner you can afford. I use it to clean out couch, chair and mattresses as well. It's brill and doesn't use chemicals.

before we had wood flooring put down through out the downstairs,I used to hire a carpet cleaner (rug doctor) and clean them myself a couple of times a year. Including the cleaning solution it costs about £25 but it takes ages as you have to keep emptying it. You could probably hire an industrial one though. If I still had carpets downstairs I would probably save and pay someone to do it for me.

charliegirl25 · 02/03/2006 20:49

Cross posts Octavia, thats the one we hire. It is a pain in the arse to keep emptying isnt it.

morningpaper · 02/03/2006 20:51

It doesn't sound satisfactory does it?

Damn carpets.

So perhaps I should ask: Has anyone put down wooden flooring lately that didn't cost too much?

MP,
My BIL bought some wood flooring off Ebay dead cheap!

octavia · 02/03/2006 20:53

Yes a total pain ! its ok the couple of times then you get really fed up and wished you'd never started. The carpets do come up really clean though and dry quickly.

octavia · 02/03/2006 20:56

wooden flooring costs the same as a good quality carpet and is worth every single penny!

chicagomum · 02/03/2006 20:57

Would def. second wood floors downstairs and shoes off at the front door. Mind you I have 2 cats so what carpet we do have (mainly the staiars) has been destroyed by them).

expatinscotland · 02/03/2006 20:58

I agree 100%, octavia! My dream home has NO carpet. Hate, hate, hate the stuff.
