how long should the clutch last on a new car?

My zafira is not even a year old. Took it in for its first service yesterday and got home today to a message asking me to ring them. Turns out they need to strip back the clutch to find out exactly what's wrong with it as it judders from cold.
If it is wear and tear we have to pay. If it is a fault then warranty covers it.
Wear and tear on a year old car? WTF is that all about?
If we do haev to pay its going to be £720
where do I get that from then? Surely a year old car shouldn't need a new clutch already?

nah, sounds like warranty should cover it no matter what. the power steering thingummy in our renault scenic started leaking just a month before the 2 yr warranty ran out..and we bloody made sure they fixed it without us paying..

CountessDracula · 02/03/2006 15:35

surely it is under warranty, how many miles have you done and is it town or motorway driving?

Yorkiegirl · 02/03/2006 15:35

10000 miles
generally town driving

I mean if you have done 30k miles in a year in town then maybe is wear and tear

CountessDracula · 02/03/2006 15:36

cna't be wear and tear

Should have gone japanese Wink

Yorkiegirl · 02/03/2006 15:36

actually thinking of changing it as not impressed with the prospect of a new clutch so soon!

new clutch! not for aaaaagggees. A clutch really should last almost the entire life of the car (in most cases) up to 80K or 90K miles anyway.

are you sure you're not just... well... crap with the gears?

sweetkitty · 02/03/2006 15:52

In my case about 10 minutes as I always have the clutch in too long!!!

My Clio judders when cold thought they all did.

Yorkiegirl · 02/03/2006 16:22

nope I'm not DC.
If I was then this would have happened on other cars. Never had any problem with the clutch on any car I have had before this one.

then it's a freak occurance. cause loads of sh*t at your dealership. milk it for all it's worth.

expatinscotland · 02/03/2006 16:38

i agree w/DC. there's no reason a clutch should go at 10,000 miles unless it's defective. normal wear and tear, my ass.

Yorkiegirl · 02/03/2006 17:43

don't worry, DH is all set to go in all guns blazin'!
There is no way this should have happened. I'm not a perfect driver but I don't drive badly.

Our previous car needed one at around 30k and that seemed too soon Shockbut juddering from cold isn't necessarily the clutch "going"(ie wear and tear) imho that is when the biting point gets so high you stall, have problems changing gear or over rev when doing so. Sounds more like a choke issue but then I'm not a mechanic !!

Piffle · 02/03/2006 17:49

Warranty
Our car is 3 yrs old and has never needed anything doing and we've clocked up some miles

Yorkiegirl · 03/03/2006 15:25

had to argue with them and go to the general manager of the franchise but got it done under warranty in the end Grin
Servicing cost £190, not so bad
