Ok I've given in and now admit I (might) have been wrong about Kindles. I nearly bought a Kindle Touch, but then I read something about Nooks Confused

Then I read something (this actually) about a new Kindle out next month with a light. Hmm..I like the idea of a light..

Now I've bought nothing cos I don't know what I want SadConfused

Argh!

I've got a Kobo Touch e-reader. I love it. Our county has an e-book library, which Kindles can't use for copyright reasons.
My SIL has an oldstyle Kindle, there's a light built into the cover she got as an extra. The cover (which is very pretty to be fair) was about £50
My little single LED book torch clips onto my Kobo just as well as it does to a real book. It cost £3.00.

Well, I don't think Nooks are available in the UK, so if that's were you are that rules that one out.

I personally have a Sony Reader. I chose this against the Kindle as (unless you convert each book into a different format yourself) the Kindles are only compatible with Amazon's propriety format. The Sony, as are the Nook and several other less popular ereaders, is compatible with epub, which was created to be the industry standard - ebooks from Waterstones, W H Smiths, in fact most retailers, are all epubs.

An integrated light is not really necessary IMO, as I just use a lamp or a book light clipped onto the cover of the reader.

Really, what reader you get is all down to what you want out of it - where you want to get your books, how you want to get them on the device (some readers need to be hooked up to a computer to transfer books onto them, like a camera or other external storage), whether you want touch screen or buttons, what size and how they feel in your hands.

If you can it may be worth having a look at the readers friends/family have, or checking them out in the shops (pretty sure Waterstones and Smiths sell readers in store still, they did when I was shopping for one), and seeing which you get on with best.

Thank you both! Really helpful. So a light isn't a deal breaker. That's good to know and I suspect will eat into the battery time.

Ladystoneheart I didn't even know Nooks weren't available in the uk! (shows how much I know about all thisBlush) Do you load epub books from a specific site? What I like about Amamzon are the blurbs about the boooks and customer feedback/opinions, which I find interesting.

With my reader, (Sony Reader PRS 650), I connect it to the laptop with a cable and use a program on the laptop to transfer the books (a bit like using iTunes with an iPod/iPhone). There are several programs I can use - the Sony one that came on a disc with the reader, Adobe Digital Editions that is free to download from any site that sells books in the epub format, or Calibre (my favourite, a free program that supports multiple formats, converting books to other formats, and some other metadata features).

The books are downloaded to the laptop from whichever site I buy them from - Waterstones/Smiths/any other bookselling website that isn't Amazon really - and then the program sends them to the reader for me. As such, browsing for books to buy is the same as if I was internet shopping for paperbacks.

Kindles and the newest (current) Sony reader allow you to browse websites for books on the reader itself, and download them straight to it over wifi or 3G - I think this is why Kindles are so popular, because there's one less step to getting the books on the device.
