I've had a Dyson for about 6 years,it's lasted pretty well but it's just about had it now.I'm inclined towards getting another Dyson, but I never thought it was that brilliant even when new and I find it very heavy to carry up and down stairs.I would also like something with a pretty long cable.I hate cylinder cleaners, so it would have to be an upright.
I've been reading about a few different ones in the Argos catalogue but can't really decide.
We have no pets so hair isn't a problem, but I have a great problem with black fluff from DH's socks on a cream bedroom carpet.

I know you have no pets but even so the Miele Cat & Dog is really good. Know what you mean about the socks, the turbo brush on the Miele is great for that sort of thing.

Definitely a Miele. I loved my first Dyson, but the second one sucked!!!!! I now have a Miele, albeit a cylinder one

trice · 23/02/2006 21:21

another vote for Miele Cat & Dog

Chandra · 23/02/2006 21:29

I have a Miele evolotion (or something of the sort, but in plain words is the Cat&Dog with some extra things). Is definitvely much better than my previous Dyson although more boring too, as you don't get to see the rubish piling on the cylinder . My Dyson only survived for 3-4 years. Mieles are build to work for 20 yrs.

Chandra · 23/02/2006 21:29

... and they are also cheaper than Dysons!

brimfull · 23/02/2006 21:31

mil worships her sebo upright

WestCountryLass · 23/02/2006 23:26

We've got the Bissel advertised on the telly at the mo, it is brill!

JanH · 23/02/2006 23:31

Why do you hate cylinders?

I have a Miele not-cat-and-dog cylinder (discontinued but there is a similar new one) and it is fantastic. I noticed at the weekend it wasn't sucking as well as normal - when I opened it the bag was completely stuffed and yet it was still managing to suck a bit.

They are dead light, easy to carry up and down stairs. Get one!

Mine was the S571, S5210 is the new one.

HENRY. Every time. Have spent a fortune on hoovers over the years- had a Dyson that was crap and now have a Bisselle which is ok in the beginning but NOTHING BEATS HENRY.

Borrowed my dad's and it's fab, picks everything up. Dh got one in his shop and he loves it- it's really light to use and good at picking up.

Also a lot cheaper than a lot of the 'posh' hoovers

wabbitintheheadlamps · 24/02/2006 01:12

Pixiefish - I'm a HENRY fan too - just got rid of a Dyson that was a miserable excuse for a vacuum cleaner, yacky yellow colour too and it didn't have eyes! (Should I assume that it didn't work 'cos it couldn't see where the dirt was )

jac34 · 24/02/2006 08:58

Thanks for all the posts, but the Mieles all seem to be cylinder cleaners.I've never got on with them, can't stand dragging the bloody things around after me,I end up smashing them into door ways and wrecking my paint work.

Sebo upright-best hoover I have EVER had-and i have ahd a few.So powerful it almost pulls itself along. Also adjusts from carpet to hard floors all by itself-I love it!

reggiemolly · 27/02/2006 12:39

Only thing about Sebo and other uprights is if you have woven rather than tufted carpets they can pull the threads and make them fluffy (according to John lewis).

I have a SEBo but had to buy a new one for this reason. now got a Miele cat and dog and it is much better (not so heavy and smaller and cheaper too).

alibubbles · 27/02/2006 13:38

A Sebo, and A Henry for the aupair as she constantly runs over the flex of the Sebo and I have had to replace it twice!

I have had numerous Dysons and they are crap!

cod · 27/02/2006 13:39
