We have a fab family tent, but DD needs a 2-man tent that she can carry around on hiking trips etc. ie Lightweight, easy to put up, Weatherproof!

I know all the good websites etc, but does anyone have any personal recommendations.

TIA

Worked for Blacks for years they tend to do a decent range for DOE. Also give discount if you show your card when your buying the stuff.

Milliways · 22/02/2006 20:25

Thanks - will havbe a look in town. However, at 15 she has no card!

For weatherproof you should be looking at a hydrostatic head of 3000mm or more. You will find cheaper tents have a HH of 2000mm or less. these may be OK if you are going to use them for a day or two at a festival, but if you are going to be half way up a mountain you need at least 3000mm in the UK.

Cant recoment a specific tent, as we only have a bigh family tent, but the maufacturer of ours, Outwell started off making mountain tents and these smaller tents have a very good recomendadtion by those in the know.

The folks at UKcampsite.co.uk would be very helpful to you.

Thanks MB, will check it out. She will only be at low level for a few nights this year (Bronze), but who knows what the Gold entails

I would rather pay a bit more for a decent tent that DS can also use when he is old enough.

cant vouch for this but it looks good

1/2 man tent

DS1 is doing DOE gold this year - they are going up Snowdon in April. Not sure but I think the county provides tents here.

1980cat · 22/02/2006 20:48

If you explain that she hasn't started yet they should be ok if she hasn't got her record book and things yet. Also so if the group are buying equipment they get bigger discounts the more they spend.
I stopped working there about a year ago now but doubt things have changed much.

Milliways · 22/02/2006 20:50

Wow MB, that does look good.

One thing is DD is a teenager & her idea of "looking good" does sometimes clash .

Jan, I think the school does have some tents, but I also think it would be worth the investment as we do a lot of family camping with friends & a small tent could be useful. Snowdon - Wow, good luck!

Milletts also give a discount (on full price goods) for people doing D o E. dd1 is going to the Brecon Beacons in the summer for her gold expedition. ds is going to St James Palace tomorrow to receive his gold award - I'm so excited but he's pretty laid back about it all.

Milliways · 22/02/2006 21:10

Thanks Ellceeel, & well done to your two! Our sixth formers are raising funds for a gold trip to Venuzuela!!!! I think Wales has fab scenery - we had a school centre there when I was at school (in the Brecons)

Milliways, that sounds fantastic! We wondered if they would try and go somewhere extra special with it being the golden jubilee year but there is not a lot of money round here - Wales sounds just fine to me!

1980cat · 22/02/2006 21:39

Blacks nd Millets are part of the same company. Worth finding out if they, or any other local shopd are doing special nights with extra disounts, if they're not suggest it to them point out that local schools are doing the DOE. Most shops found them quite succesful, you used to open late send out details to local groups and offer an extra bit of discount.

Do you want to know where you can get free tents and roll mats??? .

Milliways · 23/02/2006 15:37

Errr....

Yes please

I would recommend getting a 3 man. A 2 man tent will be very cramped for 2 people. A 3 man will give you room to store your gear in the tent.

I don't think you can go wrong with Vango tents.

I have bought from these guys before "Outdoor megastore" here . Ordered it online at lunchtime and it came the next day. Cheapest I could find on the net too.

Milliways · 23/02/2006 21:14

Thanks Scotgirl - I like the one MB recommended, which is a 3 man and have found ood reviews for it too!

Bump for Skribbles freebies?????

Sorry been busy flogging everything I can get my hands on, on Ebay. I have started a serious addiction but my digital camera has died arghhhh!

Anyway, do you live near any of the big festival sites. On the monday morning after the festival there are all sorts of people who come on to scavange the campsites. Whole familys who scoure the place for abandonded tents, cool boxes, roll mats etc. One place the local scout group come on site in a big van and fill it with loads of gear, what they don't use they sell to raise funds.

It is amazing what people leave behind, especially if it is wet they just can't be arsed carrying it to their cars or bus pick up.

I certainly wouldn't take kids or even teenagers with you though as the campsites are pretty manky and the tinks come on too to see what they can get.

We have got loads of tents from 2 man ones to giant ones with 3 bedrooms, we spotted a bike that was in working order but alas no room in the car.

If you dont fancy raking through a muddy campsite harass your local outdoor shop and offer them free publicity for their good deeds, with press releases etc.

Hi

We have had a Vango for years now and its brilliant. Had to go get a 2nd 2 years ago (due to new babe coming along) and got the updated version vango TBS micro 150 which fitted me and dd nicely. The old one is still going after 8 yrs tho is showing some wear now, not surprising as its been through an awful lot of camping in all weathers.
here is the 2 person version. Our is a bit smaller. they also do a bigger version micro 300.

tarantula · 24/02/2006 08:13

If going hiking you need to seriously consider weight and pack size so I wouldnt go for a larger tent. Our 2 man Vango slept 2 adults and 1 child (till he was 11) and with all out re-enactment gear in it too and we were very comfy.

Milliways · 26/02/2006 20:09

Thanks Skribble - scavenging after Reading Rock?? Would have to be VERY brave.
