Boring boring BORING

I've got a Stoves range type gas oven and the top is horribly greasy - cooked on greasy IYKWIM

Got CIF lemon squirty stuff and a spongy scourer but some bits just ain't shifting.

Don't know whether to use one of thoes stainless steel scourers as don't want to mark my oven! The top is black, maybe enamel?

Help from any Antheas would be great

Thanks,
from Mucky Pup

Anthea would probably say white vinegar.
Have you tried sprinkling bicarbonate on it?

Bubbaloo · 17/02/2006 14:15

I just give mine a wipe with a degreaser spray after I've used it,then every 6 months I get it cleaned professionally.Definately rec it as it comes up like new and only cost's £30.

MamaG · 17/02/2006 14:16

Ive just sprinkled some bicarb onto the bad bits so I hope you weren't taking the mick! Should I leave it for a bit?

Hvae you tried leaving ther cleaner to work for a few mins? Is it stainless steal? If so polish with a dab of baby oil afterwards, works v well and prevenst it from satining as badly again

Rhubarb · 17/02/2006 14:17

Not taking the mick! Leave it for a min then scrub it off, sometimes it works. You got any white vinegar then?

MamaG · 17/02/2006 14:19

Got brown vinegar or cider vinegar - did try the cider vin but no joy.

Its not stainless steel, it's black - possibly enamel?

Hey MamaG, try Astonish. Comes in a pot, it's a thick cream, no awful smell either. Definitely no metal scourers!

MamaG · 17/02/2006 14:40

Thanks - have tried Mr Muscle but it wasn't too good -

KBear - I feel that you have seen this , I will try Astonish.

The bicarb (well, baking soda but whats the diff?!) worked fairly well, just a few stubborn bits.

I told DH ages ago that I was sick of being the only one to clean the oven and that it was his turn - did the old "wait for him to get so fed up he does it" trick which has obviously backfired

Ovenpride - you can get it from Waitrose for sure and maybe Wilkinsons
it's quite expensive but the only thing for the job
you get a big plastic bag to put the shelves in
it's quite satisfying actually

CoolTurkey · 17/02/2006 14:44

Yep, Astonish is good. It even works on a hot Aga and nothing else does. You still have to work hard though.

MamaG · 17/02/2006 14:45

are there any limits as to what you can use it on though? A friend used it and said it was really strong stuff - my oven is quite new (oh, the shame!) so I don't want to ruin it!

The prob is I'm not sure what the top is made from

P.S. make sure you get the thick Astonish paste in a tub. They also do a standard liquid cream cleaner and that is no use to man nor beast for really burnt on stuff.

KBear · 17/02/2006 14:46

MamaG - I'm thrilled I saw it. Something else our DD's have in common - mothers who don't clean ovens often enough!

Bubbaloo

Where do you live, can you recomend the person who does yours.

Bubbaloo · 17/02/2006 16:57

I live in Essex and the firm that does my oven is based in Bethnal Green. If you want their number,no problem-I'll give it too you.
It'll come up like brand new.

Milliways · 17/02/2006 19:16

I bought some pots of "Spruce" from a local country show - it is absolutely fab, cleans the hob & oven with no smells! I have a reorder form but can't find the company (in Derby) on the net.

Blandmum · 17/02/2006 19:21

I can recmend the man from Ovenclean. He does a fantastic job!!!
