Those coloured plastic Ikea plates for kids, you know the ones

Right
My dh keeps asking if the kids will get a) get cancer or b) ingest shavings of plastic from them as the surfaces of the plates are slightly scratched from the use of cutlery

He is getting on my tits about it now, tbh, so I thought I'd pass it over to the MN jury

Surely the Swedes wouldn't let that happen

OMG something new for me to worry about

I reckon he may have a point, melamine might be better.

suzywong · 16/02/2006 11:57

don't say that, it'll go to his head

I use to throw mine and buy more when they got like that. Just In Case.

Chandra · 16/02/2006 12:00

Tell him to worry about the smog, pasive smoking, pesticides in food, cleaning products, reduced sugar food products, etc. if he's concerned about cancer, by the time he finishes thinking about all the above, he would be to tired to complain about the plates!

BettySpaghetti · 16/02/2006 12:00

I've noticed in the past that the melamine (or at least thats what I've always presumed they are) ones tend to blister and crack too.
Maybe because I put them in the dishwasher, although it says they are safe to go in there.Surely thats as bad, if not worse?

NB I tend to bin them when that happens

suzywong · 16/02/2006 12:02

we don't have a dishwasher

yes I see your point Chandra, but we are converting to the Enjo way of cleaning, she said smugly. Actually I was very surprised it worked

I was going to offer to send you out some, but you've got a store just down the road! I always buy new ones when they get like that, but more because of how they look than a worry about plastic ingestion.

Yours are more expensive than the UK though, what's $3.50 in 'real' money?

Marina · 16/02/2006 12:11

I'm with Betty, melamine flakes worry me far more. But then as dd has taken to bin-rummaging, I think in the wider scheme of things the odd scrap of plastic is unlikely to be the worst offender.
I think when and if your dh offers to source and obtain a replacement he can whinge away. I love the way men say, "is this safe/wise/best" and swallow the part of the sentence which goes "but I don't care enough to do anything about it myself, I'll just transfer my angst to you for action".

Blandmum · 16/02/2006 12:23

personaly I wouldn't worry about it....though I should say at this point that my understanding of platic chemistry is not great

The amount injested would be minescule.....we take far greater risks in our stride each day every time we get into a car.

If your are worried, chuck the buggers out and get some new ones

PS have always wanted to say this one one of your threads.....has this kicked off yet TM

suzywong · 16/02/2006 13:09

Ha
no it hasnt kicked off yet, but if you really want to suggest I' m making a racist remark against the Swedes or suggesting your children are hideous then we could have something

Serenity our Ikea is tiny, and peaceful and dinky - thank the lord, the one on the north circular used to give me panic attacks. $3.50 is about one pound 45 pence

I suppose ds2's ensuing scurvy due to his wilfullness at mealtimes is more to worry about, and Marina you are spot on!

I'm much more worried about melamine. You're not supposed to put it in the microwave and I bought a melamine plate recently that says it can't go in the dishwasher.... what's that all about???
I wish Ikea would go back to doing the flower shaped plates, not those horrid oblong-ish ones (maybe they do, I don't go very often, North Circ too )

spacedonkey · 16/02/2006 17:43

my flower shaped ones have lasted about 10 years!

Davros · 16/02/2006 18:01

The two I've got left have lasted, gawd knows what happened to the others!
