Are upright hoovers really better than cylinder ones?

I say cylinder, he says upright.

Ooh I listened to a really interesting programme on this on Radio 4 years ago and it made a lasting impression on me.
Apparently the vacuum cleaner industry divides us into 'pushers' and 'pullers' depending on preference for upright or cylinder.
I think they said that your preference was influenced by what sort of vacuum your mother had and I seem to recall that more southerners are 'pullers' while northerers are more likely to be 'pushers'.
Fascinating eh?

wordgirl · 15/02/2006 14:25

Oh and I'm a pusher, as is my mum and we're from the north so this theory would appear to be borne out by me at least!

hunkermunker · 15/02/2006 14:26

Cylinders more effective.

Tinker · 15/02/2006 14:26

Very interesting. His mother always had uprights, my mother switched to cylinders! Both northerners though.

You're obviously a southerner hunkermunker

TinyGang · 15/02/2006 14:29

Lol Wordgirl! Good old R4 applying some psychology. I never thought of it that way. I guess I'm a 'pusher' then (is that the upright type?) but live in the south.

My mum always used an upright - come to think of it they could stress test cleaners on my mum - she's quite house proud and has been through a fair few in her time.

waterfalls · 15/02/2006 14:30

I always have uprights, because I am whacky handed and get into fight with cylinders, as I do with ironing boards

doormat · 15/02/2006 14:30

got both but prefer cylinder
also great for teenagers and their hickeys

Gingerbear · 15/02/2006 14:31

Miele, Miele, Miele.
I [Heart] Mieles.

A cylinder convert after being a Dyson pusher.

TinyGang · 15/02/2006 14:34

Cylinders always look like they're going to be more hard work. More bending over and juggling a long pipe (sounds like a Soho 'act' doesn't it)

Tinker · 15/02/2006 14:38

Uprights look like they take up too much space though.

we've had one of each up right every time from me, we've got the dyson animal one. the little one we had was crap - althou it was cheap and we have dogs so perhaps thta's why. my aunty swears by the henry one if that helps? mum's had both up right/cylinders, and we're southern. upright is better for my back - least that's my excuse! lol.

mawbroon · 15/02/2006 14:48

Cylinder for me without question. How do you hoover the car with an upright????

mawbroon · 15/02/2006 14:48

Erm, I mean INSIDE the car

munz · 15/02/2006 14:49

I can take the pole out on mine and use the hose only and then we have the animal attatchment.

TinyGang · 15/02/2006 14:49

Just use the hose attachment thingy. That's dh's job anyway

TinyGang · 15/02/2006 14:50

I have to ask...what is an animal attachment? My imagination is running wild!

munz · 15/02/2006 14:51

lol, erm hold on will see if I can find it.

munz · 15/02/2006 14:52

this

hunkermunker · 15/02/2006 15:01

WG, guilty as charged

Loathe Dysons - overpriced and over-heavy. Miele any day.
