Soft bathmat to protect baby's head

My 5 month old crashes and splashes around so hard in the bath that the back of his head literally bleeds! He is still lying down (too big for a bath support though) and he flails around, happily, thumping his head up and down so much that there are abrasions on the back of his head. This may also be being worse by our old bath that probably doesn't have any enamel on the bottom and is a bit rough.
All the bathmats I can see seem to be non slip, which is fine, but I specifically want one that is soft, padded and comfy. Can anyone recommend one?

Can you go in the bath with him?

(sorry, no idea about bath mats)

I know you said that he's too big for a bath support - but you could use this on most size babies

support

Maybe a weird suggestion - but could you buy a cheap changing mat like this and just put it in the bottom of the bath?

Also, can you not just hold his head so that he floats?
I can't imagine how shallow the bath must be if he's laid flat on his back?

If you do a nice deep bath, and put your hand supporting their neck and head, then they will just float - he can still thrash about! Plus it will keep him nice and warm too!

Thanks both. I can't go in with him as am on my own with two kids to bath, so not really practical. And, he s too long for those supports - the bottom ridge is on his lower back which looks uncomfy. But I like the changing mat idea. I think that might just work! Thank you x

Can you not just put your arm under his head, don't think I would let him thrash about so much that he actually hurts himself.
Or you can get a seat thing which he sits into, would keep him sitting upright.
