Moving toddler to a bed

My dd will be 21 months old when ds is born. I'm thinking of giving ds her cot bed (with new mattress naturally!) and possibly moving dd to a bed. Any recommendations please?

We are happy with our IKEA child's bed: it is convertible from a cot-size bed, to medium, to full length, so feels quite cosy when it is in it's smallest size. Also it is very low so good for when they are learning not to fall out. And very cheap. But not as romantic or pretty looking as others.

handlemecarefully - snap!

I did have the same plan as you, but decided to wait and see - dd will have enough changes going on in her life without getting kicked out of her bed too! (so my new plan is for ds to sleep in the carry-cot for the first couple of months and then I'll worry about it).

That's all really. I would also be interested to hear about people's experiences of moving from cot to bed though.

BTW you don't need to buy a new matress for a second sibling - it's just second hand bought ones that can cause problems (because you don't know how they have been stored etc.). I'm going to double check the SIDS website though.

have a look here - definately says that the risk from second hand matresses only applies to mattresses previously used by babies from other homes (plus there is no risk if the mattress is cleaned properly anyway).

Thanks Senora - that will save me a few pounds!

I moved DD to a bed saturday night. She is nearly 15 months old. It took just over half an hour of going back upstairs to tuck her back in, but she has been fine.

We have a small landing so I just shut all the upstairs doors and put the gate on at the top of the stairs, keeping her door open, so if she wanted to have a wander about before getting back into bed she could, I didn't want to keep her confined.

We didn't go for a bed guard, instead, as we have a spare single matteress, we put the spare mattress under the bed so a bit stuck out (IYSWIM) so if she did fall out (which she didn't), she would fall onto the mattress first.

Can honestly say that Saturday night was the best nights sleep we have had since DD was 8 months old, and I was worried about moving her to a bed cos I thought she was a but young.

Sorry to ramble, HTH.

We moved both DS1 and 2 into a bed at about 2y 8m. DS1 went straight into a full sized mid-height cabin bed! It's about 3feet high and because of the rails round it, he can't fall out. I'm just waiting for DS2s to arrive as he's having the same sort of bed - at the moment he's on thick foam on the floor, poor deprived child.

I guess for a younger child, the Ikea junior beds are ideal though.

Oh, and I don't think the cot matress had time to cool between children. DS2 slept in the travel cot until he was too heavy for me to get him out. That's when we brought DS1 his bed!

Neither of my DSs showed any sign of wanting to move out of their cot BTW.

We moved DD into a bed a month ago aged 18 months. We got her the little toddler bed from Mothercare (£50) and she loves it. She didn't get on much with her cot but has taken to the bed well. She is now back in the routine of going to sleep in it on her own and she doesn't get up. And she will take her naps in it - something she had never done in the cot.

We choose a toddler bed as it saves space in her room - to fit allt he toys in. Figured it will last her 'till she is about 5 or 6 and we will probably move in that time and will get a proper bed then.

She only fell out once in each of the first two nights. She is fine now.

Hulababy · 01/12/2003 16:51

Forgot to add - we kept DD's mattress from her cot (didn't fit toddler bed - that takes cot bed size). Mattress fits under her bed during the day and we pull it at night incase she does fall. Have a bed guard at the other side.

We also used the cot mattress as a crash mat. The bed guard for the IKEA bed is not good - DS made his nose bleed on it within minutes so we took it off and put the mattress there.

i am considering putting ds in a bed although he is only 16 motnhs
He is big for his ages and seems very squashed in his cot
only thing is, his room is v small - need something about the length of the cot or his wardrobe wont fit in the room....
suggestions?

Hulababy · 01/12/2003 17:41

popsycal - a toddler bed is about 5 foot long and a normal single bed is about 6 foot. Width is smaller on toddler bed too. The sizes of the Mothercare toddler bed (which is standard for most) is on their website.

Ah, here it is

Ah, here it is:

Bed dimensions: 146 x 76 x 60cm
Requires cot bed mattress (140 x 70cm)

cheers....will get out my tape measure!

handlemecarefully · 02/12/2003 10:42

Thanks for this guys - am now erring between the Mothercare toddler bed, and the bed that twiglett describes which has another pull out single bed below the main bed (which can be used as a crash mat!). Think I might go straight to Twiglett's option - as if I get the toddler bed then I'll only have to buy another bigger bed when dd gets older.
