Baby Gap Sizes-Is it just my DD?

Thirtysix · 13/02/2006 18:49

My DD is 10mts old and whilst I would describe her as tall and "solid" I don't think she is huge.
On Saturday I splurged for the first time ever in Baby Gap and bought some lovely things, including a pair of jeans embroidered with red hearts-size 12-18 mts so they would fit her now and last a bit.

Well the poor child was nearly cut in half when I put them on her this morning-they were non-elasticated but I am shocked that 12-18mt size doesn't fit whereas she is fine in most other 9-12mt sizes.

When I took them (and a skirt) back today, the manager asked if she had a "pot belly" and basically said my daughter was fat and I should look at elasticated waists. She pointed out another pair of rousers with a naff kind of knitted waistband but then added "well of course if she is rather large, this wouldn't be flattering as it kind of lets it all out".

Well when I measured both 18-24 and 2yr sized jeans, the waistbands were EXACTLY the same.Is this right???
Am I missing something? Is her wasit supposed to remain a constant size until she is 2 and only grow in height?

Anyone else had this problem with BAby GAp or do I really have a little bloater on my hands?

You don't have a bloater on your hands, but you do have a cause for complaint at the shop assistant who said your baby wouldn't be 'flattered' by a pair of trousers, implying that she would need to be thinner to wear them.

I would phone head office and rage. And never ever take your daughter into Gap again. Try Next.

Flossam · 13/02/2006 18:52

No I think their sizes are very much on the small side. Having said that DS isn't tiny in any which way! He hovers around the 75th-91st centile.

at the way they spoke to you though, saying your DD was fat! Also, 'flattering?' She is a baby FFS not even a little girl/ teenager. A long way away from worrying as to whether clothes are flattering or not, surely?

tillykins · 13/02/2006 19:08

How dare she talk about your little girl like that? That is absolutely disgraceful

And even if she was overweight - whatever that is supposed to mean - it isn't this daft womans place to say

I am really shocked thirtysix, you should complain loud and long. If she talks to mothers of babies like this, what is she like around the 6 year olds, 10 year olds etc - I shudder to think what impression she gives them about their bodies. Disgraceful

Oh, and yes, I think they are a bit on the small side and if its any consolation, my son was 2 last november and whilst he has had dungarees and tops from there, he has never fitted the trousers, they are too short and too tight
And your daughter blooming well should have a pot belly, she is 10m old!

Tirade over! complain and keep us informed!

Jbck · 13/02/2006 19:08

I must admit I like their stuff as DD is tiny only now is she getting anywhere near the 9th centile & she's 4. she was down at 0.4 for months when she was younger. Wouldn't have stood for that kind of nonsense mind you, cheeky c*w! She probably had her own love handles hanging over her jeans as is the fashion at the moment.

Gap and Gymboree (both US brands) are very petite
I know this as my dd has the tinest waist in the world and I rely on Gap and Gymboree for her trousers...
Pumpkin Patch are really good for sturdier built kids, my ds was a big lad and he got on great with them.
And the sales girl is worth an official complaint I feel...

LipstickMum · 13/02/2006 19:21

What a rude shop assistant, I would certainly take her name and complain. I don't buy a lot of stuff at the Gap, but what I have bought I have actually found to be quite generous, but I think it must depend what you buy! I have a knitted, lined jacket/cardi for a 6 month old that dd1 wore until she was over a year. My two dd's are long, but not hugely tall and I would defintely have said they were chubby as babies, normally so! Neither of them wore Gap jeans much.

Twiglett · 13/02/2006 19:27

never had a problem with gap boys' clothes but do with girls .. they are definitely cut too small .. my DD was on 50th centile and Gap clothes don't fit

I would be extremely cross

mcmudda · 13/02/2006 19:35

Yup - I have dd who is 50th centile weight and 25th height. At 7 months she couldn't fit into 6-12mths dungarees and all her Gap tops are skinny fit - fine if you're 17 but not great on a baby IMO.

It seems to get better in the toddler range ie 2 and up - my ds was off the centile charts weight and height but always managed to fit nicely into the right age range.

Baby Gap does not fit babies

Holymoly321 · 13/02/2006 19:39

Baby Gap clothes are TINY TINY TINY! Plus, and this is common everywhere and is really starting to get my goat - THEY HAVE HARDLY ANY CLOTHES FOR BOYS!!! Masses and masses of gorgeous girl stuff but only a few tops for boys!

zazazoo · 13/02/2006 20:02

I love gap, true they have much more for girls than for boys.
DS is now 9 and 1/2 month, he wears some jeans 12-18 while some 6-12 turtle neck are way too big.
My impression is that trousers are much smaller than tops. But I might be wrong.
But I agree it's not easy to shop with such a variety of fit.

vickiyumyum · 13/02/2006 20:10

baby gap does seem to come up small now, whereas when ds1 was in baby gap stuff i had the oppposite problem and whenhe was 2 he was still wearing 12-18 month size, when in other shops he was in age 2-3! when i had ds2 (who is now just four) i thought he must be the fattest kid around as tog et trousers to fit him at 5 months old i would have had to buy age 2 and then they were too long, whereas in other shops he fitted the clothes for his age. he is a different build to ds1. ds1 is skinny and average height and ds2 is tall and stocky but def not fat, no belly on him, or bum his trousers are constantly falling down.
it is def gap sizes that are the problem and not your dd, most shops do some kind of elasticated adjustable waistband on baby trousers but gap seem to like their fixed size waistbands.

Squarer · 13/02/2006 20:11

Gap sizing is very small I have found, but please please make a complaint against the shop assistant - write a letter to head office. That is a disgraceful thing to say. Apart from anything else the phrase "has she got a pot belly" indicates she is an eejit. Erm, yes, she has got a pot belly, she is a baby and that is why I am buying baby clothes. I'm furious on your behalf

Thirtysix · 13/02/2006 21:04

Thank you all so much...was beginning to think that I was being over sensitive.I have ahd a weight probem all mylife and would NEVER wish it upon my DD.She is on 91sr centile but for both heigt AND weight and eats nothing really other than veg and protein because I am very aware of her genetic predisposal.
You have given me the impetus to complain-you are all right-she is meant to have a pot belly, she is a baby and also a human being.

Thank you al

Definatley complain about the shop assistant - cheeky cow

DD1 (21 months) is currently in 18-24 month gap jeans she has a potbelly (not that she is fat but she arches a back quite a bit) and the waistband does cut in a bit.

DD1 does have little legs and normally if the trousers were from a british firm ie Next she would be in 12-18 months but with anything from the US I tend to have to buy a size larger (if that makes any sense).

i love baby gap stuff for my 11 month old dd, but, i have to get her 18-24 months, i wouldnt describe my dd as fat, shes tall for her age, and solid, dont worry, its just gaps crappy sizing, must admit if a shop assistant had said that about my dd id have lost my temper!

Thirtysix · 13/02/2006 22:43

Oh I really must get into the habit of "preveiew message"-my typing is just awful!-sorry

OP posts:
edodgy · 13/02/2006 22:47

She was definately out of order saying that to you. I love gap stuff on my 2.10 year old dd but she is tall and skinny (91st centile for height , 25th for weight) She wears gap age 4 They do some lovely jeans now with an inner adjustable elastic bit which you button to size like maternity wear which is a godsend for me as though age 4 fit her perfectly i length they're big in the waist maybe you could keep an eye out for this type.

edodgy · 13/02/2006 22:48

and yes their sizes are crappy.

MistressMary · 13/02/2006 22:53

I hate Gap.
My OH buys stuff in there for DS and they are lovely clothes but they are tiny.
He has outgrown them all.
Much prefer H and M.

Socks is the only thing I bother with and what happens between the ages of 3 and 4?
Couldn't get any for that age.
Grrr.

Georgiesmum · 06/03/2006 21:11

My Dd is 11 months an is fast growing out of 12-18 months Baby gap that her granparents bought her!! Tey are made for teeny weny babies if you ask me. She was a cheeky cow, i think I may have slapped her!!

Flossam · 06/03/2006 21:13

I was looking at their size chart the other day and they were much much smaller.

1980cat · 06/03/2006 21:41

Whilst I agree the shop asistant in this case wasn't any good I actually ike Gap sizes, they are the only place where my daughter is actually in her right size (she two years three four months and still wears 18-24 month from places like tescos and debenhams and even some of that falls off her)and and most things fit her realy well.
I've always got a lot of her clothes there, sales are usually realy good, but haven't bought anything recently as there is nothing nice in the toddler sizes.

swedishmum · 06/03/2006 23:24

What a vile assistant! How dare she be so rude?
We have a gap outlet near us and I've learnt not to look at sizes - dd who is 2 has some 9 - 12 month cut off trousers and some 2 - 3 year stuff. Lengths vary hugely too on trousers. Same for all my kids - in fact dd who is 10was wearing an age 2 summer top (gorgeous) I bought for 50p until last year!
