Buying a new car - did/do you haggle on optional extras?

Do I accept the listed prices for optional extras eg metallic paint, rear parking camera & sat nav, mats/bumper protectors/side door protectors or do I haggle? Did you?

I'm buying from a dealership and it's a new car.

You always haggle with car Dealers, whether the car is new or old. We got fabric protection and a better guarantee with ours. My dad never left without mats, even for really cheap second had wrecks.

And you haggle up the trad in on your old car too!

When you've haggled over the price as much as possible, then you start on the extras.

It's worth getting Which magazine, as this tells you the list price of all cars, and (more importantly) the price that you should actually expect to pay.

If you don't ask you don't get! I would also ask of they have any pre reg models available of the car- you can save a fortune that way. My husband bought a new mini last feb, but because it had been registered the previous December we saved a couple of thousand pounds.

Absolutely you haggle. You may also get a better price by saying you'll take a stock car rather than built to order. I got a huge discount on my last car as I didn't care about colour and they had this one on the books - I didn't pay for any of the extras I 'didn't want' (I did, but they didn't need to know that).
Make sure you walk away at least once - otherwise you won't get the best deal. And check the 'What Car' best price they reckon you should get down to

Always always haggle especially with car dealers they are professional hagglers, give them both barrels

Absolutely haggle and be prepared to walk out the showroom. We did this and went to garage round the corner and bought car that same day (much cheaper). Salesman had absolutely no clue about what he was trying to sell and even tried to order us a model that had stopped being produced. My husband tried to tell him but he wouldn't listen. In the end we walked out and they phoned us back the next day offering us loads of extras etc but they were too late. It pays to have competent, well trained and knowledgeable staff

Always haggle on any car - dealers expect it and have already built an amount into the price that they are prepared to drop by. Also, if it's a new car try going just before the end of the month - salesmen usually have monthly targets to meet!
