simple kite recommendations

DS (5) was given a kite for his birthday, but it doesn't fly at all well. We'd like to get another one anyway - any recommendations? Don't want to spend a lot/much, and it doesn't need really to do anything other than fly! I think 1 handle probably better than 2 as our 2-hander just seems to crash straight down to earth. Recommendations of something that you've actually managed to make work - with small child holding the string - would be v helpful.

oh, we'll be flying it in town parks, mostly, if that makes any difference. So needs to work without gigantic amounts of wind...

I'm late to this thread, but we took a Brookite Shadow on holiday over half term. A certain minimum of wind is needed, but with a light breeze our girls could get it flying by running into the wind with it. With a decent wind, it just went up really easily. I think it's a great beginners kite.

We've got some single line ones that pack away in their own little bags. They were about £1.50 in Home Bargains.

Went to fly kites recently at Dunstable Downs - a local Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) famous as a kite-flying spot. We spent a couple of hours trying (and failing) to fly a two handle kite - then bought a Pocket Kite at the visitor centre for £5. It has one handle and flew instantaneously.
