Cot Recommendations

I have decided to bite the bullet and buy a new cot for 8 month old baby. I got a cheapo one from Kiddicare and its not very good. I have decided that I want to have 2 so I can bring her downstairs if needsbe at night so she doesn't disturb my 8 year old son. I want a nice, strong, big one that is easy to put together and that will arrive quickly. Any recommendations?

We got ours from Mothercare, I can't remember the name now. It wasn't one of the more expensive ones, but it was good and strong, and lasted my two kids. I passes it on to a womens refuge when we finished with it and it is still going strong.

I have one made by mamas and papas (stocked by John Lewis). Its very sturdy and also looks nice - its a cotbed but they do cots too. It was easy to put together and we got it pretty quickly.

i think we got an Ascot from m/care - about £70- not plush but was absolutely fine, and hopefully we will use it for no.2

Ours is a Mamas and Papas too but just a cot. Has 3 heights (but at 8 months you'd only need the lowest), dropside (never used!), sturdy, easy to put together and move base. Ours has lasted ds 5.5 and still in use for dd 2.3 and looking good. Cost about £100 ex mattress. Alternatively could you use a travel cot ?

We got a Mamas and Papas cot bed (Donatella) for ds1, and cos he was only 18 months old when ds2 came along, we had to get another one cos he still needed it.
Chose the exact same one second time though, love it. Everyone comments on how gorgeous it is, and it's nice and big and sturdy.
Also had in mind that I wanted them to share a room when they were big enough, and wanted them to have matching beds.

had a mothercare aSCOT cot for dd1. got a bedside cot for dd2 as she loves her cuddles. was 150quid from mothercare, and is lovely.

Looks like John Lewis, Mothercare, Mamas & Papas then. Thanks everyone, I'll get on to it. I could use the travel cot as its just an extra but the proper cot I've already got is crap so need at least one good wooden one.

How about getting a cotbed so you don't then have to bother with a junior bed for your eldest?

Demented · 28/11/2003 23:34

We've got a Mothercare cot, the one with the playbeads, it's still going strong (second child in it now), it wasn't very expensive to my memory, has a dropside (which I am glad of as DS2's birth has left me with a dodgy lower back) and teething guards.

Blu · 28/11/2003 23:41

Hey Davros, not sure where you live, but I've got a Mothercare Playbead one that you could have tomorrow, £35. They are sturdy, take the bigger size M'care mattress, two mattress heights, let down side, plain beech wood. Won't be on the e mail that MN have for me until Monday, tho'!

Thanks Blu, I'm in London NW3. DOn't know if that would work. HOWEVER, before seeing your message I rushed to John Lewis yesterday morning (packed at 9.50am!) and ordered a lovely, brand new cot bed which is being delivered on Tuesday. So I suppose I'm committed now (or should be!). If you're nearby though Blu let me know asap. Thanks everyone.
My next problem is a black out blind for the window. Everyone I've tried wants me to do half the work and I'd rather not or, if I do, I want it much cheaper! Then its 10 weeks to get it! There's already American shutters 1/3rd of the way up the window so I'm wondering if I can bodge with some black out fabric and velcro for the other 1/3rd......

Good shopping Davros! (anyway, I'm in S London).
If you can bear it, IKEA do blackout roller blinds in a variety of sizes, v cheap.

Davros · 01/12/2003 14:21

Thanks so much Blu. I am planning a trip to Ikea next week to get a nice rug for the room so will try the roller blinds too. That's a great help.
