Reusable nappies

I want to try reuasbles but I'm not sure which are the best overall. I'm not quite sure what extras you need to buy with them ie; liners/outer wraps. I quite liked the idea of an all-in-one but on closer inspection on a bambino mio site it seems to say that you have an outer cover, and inner nappy and a liner. I'm quite confused now. I've had a look at the reviews on here and I would obviously pick the most reliable ones 'Mother-ease'(according to the reviews) over clever designs and other extras. But it would be nice to have some variety. I used terries with a Kooshie cover with my first baby for a week before I gave up completly, I couldn't get the stains out and they leaked after 5 minutes. How easy is it clean them?

Rosy, if things don't get better it could be a problem with your washing machine. Our last washing machine appeared to be washing OK but if I left a load in the machine too long it would start to smell (my first washing machine so I thought that was what happened when you left clothes in too long, this was pre children) eventually it developed another problem and we got a man out to repair it, turns out it hadn't been pumping the dirty water away properly and obviously wasn't cleaning properly.

Well I think I've got my head around all the different styles. I love the tots bots nappies but their wraps are quite boring in comparison to others I've seen. What other wraps can go over a Tots Bot? I've seem some really sweet stuffable wraps would they do? I was thinking of the minki paws wrap.

I had a look in my local baby shop today just to look, but ended up spending £25 on reusables. I couldn't help it the owner is the most impressively pushy man I've ever encountered, hes made me buy a whole travel system before now that I didn't want. They stocked Kooshie soft stuffables, which were very pretty but looked useless. Bambino prefolds, nature baby nappies and wraps. I ended up buying 6 Bambino prefolds for £12 and 2 nature wraps for £13. Oh and some disposable liners. I used the nappy straight away (I know, I know, wash first). I folded it as the diagram showed me for a boy and tried to get the wrap as snug as I could, but even with the adjustable leg poppers it was quite baggy. I think although hes the right weight hes still quite skinny. Anyway despite the initial worry about the bulkiness and straining when trying to do his bodysuit poppers back up it looked really cute. He was only in it for 2 hours before I shoved a disposable on him ready for bed (already feel guilty). It had leaked slightly, but that was because the prefold had shifted. I'll have to experiment with folding. I was really happy with it, its much better than the Kooshie (now named Kushie btw). When I get the Tots bots I'll brave it for a night nappy. I'm still not sure about going out with them though. I'd have to take a bag and spare ones.So I think I'll co-ordinate stuffables, shaped and maybe one all-in-one for dh.

I'm really getting into this now, I see why there are dedicated forums for it. I'm even thinking about creating some designs myself. I think this is really appealing to my materalistic nature.

I was told that you can buy extenders for bodysuits, any ideas on where to look? Also any where that sells sleepsuits that are baggier around nappy area would be good too. Btw your help has been invaluable. I found the kitty kins site the most informative and easy to understand but then saying that it was the last one I visited, I probably knew a little more by then. If anyone sees any cute nappies/wraps let me know, I'm becoming quite addicted now. I really doubt this will save me money.

If you really want good wraps try some of the web sites - I think Minkis do just wraps (don't have to be stuffable) and there's wacky wraps, I think bear behinds do animal print ones and If you look for the wahm websites there are links to a whole load more! Oh yes and the nature baby tie dye ones are good if you like that sort of thing. One day I'l attempt links - maybe later!!

misdee · 29/11/2003 22:50

rsoy, i put the nappies on a pre-wash cycle first, then on at the usual 60degree wash. it make sures all horrid bits are off first before it does the main wash. how many rinse cycles does your machine have? mine has 4, and havent had a problem with smelly nappies. they come up sparkling. btw found fairy useless for nappies (as well as tesco's non bio and ariel), use persil atm, seems to be good, but have to be careful cos of dd1 skin.

ninja · 29/11/2003 22:56

have a look at this , and this , and this ,and \linkThis has a list of all kinds of great sites myweb.tiscali.co.uk/pondlive/wahmnappies.htm\this{},

Hope these work - it's my first time!

Demented · 29/11/2003 22:58

Bekki, the Motherease wraps work well with Tots Bots, they have one or two different designs, I also have a Nature Babies tie dye wrap which isn't bad but not my first choice for dryness. Some of the fleece wraps are nice for night use, Tots have a red wrap and Nappysaurus wraps are lovely. Minki now do a Flippa which is a stuffable nappy or a wrap, I believe she has tested this to go over a Tots. Enjoy shopping!

I haven't bought any nappies for ages and now you are tempting me to start looking again!!!

zebra · 30/11/2003 09:50

I'll phone you this afternoon, Bekki!!
Glad to hear you're becoming such an addict. Even more addictive than Mumsnet, isn't it?
I didn't think the guy in Kindergarten was that pushy... a local Bengali gal refers to him as "that snobby Indian fellow!" but I find ethnic prejudice between British-Asians a bit amusing, anyway.

zebra · 30/11/2003 17:59

Just realised that Ebay usually has lots of good deals going on 2nd hand Naps, but I imagine it's "safer" to buy off of UKP 2nd hand forum.

Bekki · 30/11/2003 18:53

I probably will buy off UKP eventually. I'll try yours before I buy anything else though.

Ds2 was feeding for most of the day and you can imagine what that produced. I changed 10 soiled nappies today. Two of them were reusables. The first one leaked out of the leg and the next out of the top. But it only bothered me because I was looking for it. The rest of the dirty nappies (huggies frredom) leaked a bit as well. I think its just one of those days. The stains have all come out quite easily.

I looked on Mothercare site but there were no nappy pails, I'll have to go back to that baby shop again.

RE; smelly nappies. I wash at 60 but make my own washing powder (1 cup soap flakes to 1 cup washing soda or 0.5 WS and 0.5 borax. I use 2tblsp per wash. And then vinegar in the rinse. Crucila thing for sweet smelling nappies though is a few drops of lavender in the conditioner compartment. They come out smelly lovely. Never thought it would last thorugh an automatic washng machine but it does.

The WAHM nappies and wraps are great. You think the others are brill until you discover the designs you can get from WAHMums for the same prices.

If you are thinking of nighttime I would really recommend wool Been using mine for a fortnight now. Only needed to wash it once although using it everynight and not a single leak! Give a really cuddly bum as well and because they are loose fitting they go over anything - kushies, totbots, terries....

Katherine · 01/12/2003 11:34

can someone please explain to me why I have just bought 2 more nappies! Angelbabes this time. Don't need new nappies, just need bigger wraps but everytime I look......

Though cloth was meant to save money

Tissy · 01/12/2003 12:34

Bekki- don't bother with the nappy buckets you get in mothercare- they're too small! We got a bin from Do-It-All which looks like a red dustbin about 18 inches high, with a lid which has catches to stop inquisitive fingers rummaging about! It only cost £5.99 and easily holds 2-3 days worth of dirty nappies and wipes (have you cottoned onto washable wipes yet? )

bobsmum · 01/12/2003 14:07

Can someone explain to me how stuffables work? Do you have to wash the whole thing after each change as if it was a nappy or do you just extract the prefold/terry/whatever and keep using the stuffable bit? Is is just a fancy wrap? I've never seen one in real life, so I just can't picture how they work.

Real reason - Kittykins have a cute pawprints Minki stuffable and I want it now!

Demented · 01/12/2003 14:28

Bobsmum, I wash the whole thing every use.

Katherine · 01/12/2003 14:48

You can take the stuffing out to wash but I can never be bothered - seems to come out in the wash anyway. I would wash the whole thing every time as the inner is against the babies skin so will get poo, wee etc on it and IME fleece gets smelly quicky umless its washed. However fleece also dries really quickly so its no trouble washing it - just chuck it in with your ordinary wash at 40 degrees.

bobsmum · 01/12/2003 15:01

That makes more sense. Are they bulkier than a shaped nappy and a wrap? I use tots at the mo, but the ME wrap is getting a bit tight.

Katherine · 01/12/2003 15:52

The good thing about stuffable wraps is that you control what you put in them - so they can be thicker but generally not. The fuzzis and nature babies are certainly quite thin but some of the other stuffables which are made from fleece are much fatter - the fatter ones do tend to be funkier though!

Bekki · 02/12/2003 00:32

I'm buying that too bobsmum. I was just looking around for a second hand one but I've only found a newborn sized. Still I'm definatley going to fork out for it. I've just bought 3 blue tots bots with boosters and napi nipa for £22 from ebay. I don't know if thats a fair price or not. Well I say I bought them but I don't know if my payment details went through. I can see a nasty e-mail coming my way.
Has anyone got a link for angelbabes I can't find it anywhere.
Zebra sorted me out with the wraps (thankyou) and now theres no leaks. I even used them to go out in today (ds2 that is not me). Btw zebra that damp tots bot was drying on our radiator for 3 hours!

Bekki - sounds lke you got an ok deal. Tots are usually just over £7, boosters are at least £1 each, maybe more, and a nippa on its own would be over £1. So say you've saved up to a fiver?

Katherine · 02/12/2003 14:30

Rosy · 09/12/2003 20:15

Thanks everyone, I'll try those ideas.
