Ice Cream Makers - are they worth it?

suzywong · 09/02/2006 13:53

It's summer down here and we are getting through a lot of ice cream, some of which I am making my self and throwing in Milo (like Australian Ovaltine) as it's one sure fire way of getting B vitamins and iron in to very fussy ds2.

I am happy to beat it two hourly but I wonder does an ice cream maker make a vast difference and if so which would you recommend?

Oh wise ones

We had one as children and loved it. It was a manual one, but that was half the fun, IYKWIM.

Sooooooooooooo very tired and therefore I am off to bed, if I can think of the name of it, I will come back and post.

Take care.

Hattie05 · 10/02/2006 00:36

We won't humour you because you so very carefully pointed out that ice cream is a necessity for you due to your hot summer days.

Here in England that is just not the case so i am sulking.

So i'm gonna tell you ice cream makers are rubbish.

Hattie05 · 10/02/2006 00:37

only joking, i can't tell you anything about them cos have never used one!

Thought you'd appreciate the bump though.

suzywong · 10/02/2006 07:31

thanks

bump

for those with the sliightest real interest, you will be agog to learn that beating the icecream I made did not eliminate the ice crystalsc, causing ds2 to pronounce it "Yuck"

So looks like I'll have to go shopping.

Oh and there is no such thing as Argos here, so please don't rub it in and tell me that's where you got yours.

Much obliged

are they really $300?

Blimey
but I bet it's worth it in the long run

Let me know if you see one in one of the national chain stores

You're, oh god I can't remember, QLD?

My brother got one on amazon for about £30. I don't know if it's any good because he hasn't used it yet...it's far too cold!

Carmenere · 10/02/2006 08:35

I got one in Tchibo and it was pretty good. You put the main bit in the freezer beforhand but it works very well. I would definitely invest in one if I were you.

Hazellnut · 10/02/2006 08:54

We have one you putin the freeze before hand - and didn't think before buying it but if you have a standard UK drawer freezer, the large one doesn't fit in the freezer making it useless - oops !!

LeahE · 10/02/2006 08:56

The ones you freeze the bowl in the freezer first are good (and worth the money IMO) but you do need to plan in advance and can only make one batch a day (because you need to refreeze the bowl for 18 hours or something like that).

The ones that freeze themselves are fab (and you can use on the spur of the moment and make ice-cream 24/7 if you want) but at least £250. And you need a big kitchen because apparently they don't take well to being moved -- best set up in one location and left there.

suzywong · 10/02/2006 09:09

choices choices choices

I share miniscule kitchen with MIL so a keep in the freezer one my be better

Hello LeahE. have we seen you around somewhere before?

Frenchgirl · 10/02/2006 10:18

definitely get one suzy, it does make a difference and think of all the different flavours you can make, yum
we have one and dd loves the lemon ice-cream I make with it, so much tastier than then old supermarket cr*p and no ice crystals
also I have bought an ice-cream (and sorbet, frozen yogurt, etc) recipe book which is brilliant

have fun

Reviews of several ice cream makers, including that one, are here .

It's definitely a put-the-bowl-in-the-freezer-first type, but it looks like pretty good value.

suzywong · 10/02/2006 13:51

thanks for that......oddly enough someone has just this minute bought a Philips HR2302 that I was watching on ebay......$50 including postage......bloss????????????

Thanks LeahE, I didn't know about that consumer site, where abouts in Aus are you?

Just thought I'd mention Somerfield are selling Kenwood IM200 ice-cream makers for £9.99! I'm sure they're not as good as many others but for the price....! If you're not sure if a maker is a good idea or not then this may be a cheap way to find out!

divamummy · 14/02/2006 22:42

i have cheap electric one from argos and i love it. it comes with recipe book and the ice cream really tastes lovely. smooth soft, definately recommend one in summer. want summer now

MrsSpoon · 14/02/2006 22:50

I've got the Magimix one the Frenchgirl has and have only used it once , might get it out in the summer, hope DH hasn't chucked it out, he's been nesting.
